Schwab Visa Terms May Be Changing. Another One Bites The Dust?

Post image for Schwab Visa Terms May Be Changing. Another One Bites The Dust?

Starting in October, Schwab Invest First Visa credit cardholders should keep an eye out for mailings or other announcements about changes to their terms and conditions.

The Schwab Visa has been one of the most popular credit cards around for years.  The card pays a flat 2% cash back on all purchases, deposited directly into a Schwab brokerage account each month.  It’s a lucrative rewards program that couldn’t be any simpler.

Back in April, Schwab discontinued the credit card for new applicants, but current cardholders were grandfathered in and able to keep their rewards programs intact.  Unfortunately, that may about to change.

Schwab has started telling customers that on October 1, 2010 they will be relinquishing their sponsorship of the card, giving full control to FIA Card Services.  As of this writing, they are emphatic that no changes to the terms have been announced. The only real change is that Schwab credit cardholders will have to go to FIACardServices.com to check their balances and pay their bills, rather than doing so through Schwab.com. But I don’t expect these terms to stay unchanged for long.

The 2% reward rate was largely a marketing expense for Schwab, since they were able to recoup costs through commissions and other costs associated with their brokerage accounts.  FIA doesn’t have that luxury, so it will be interesting to see how long they keep the rewards program intact.

Don’t despair, other 2% cards are out there

In case you get a notice in the mail soon that your rewards are being scaled back, keep these cards in the back of your mind:

    this is horrible

Schwab sucks! I am cancelling my brokerage account and looking for another card! A holes of a Company, to sucker people in as a marketing ploy and then dump it. Never do business with them!

Thanks for writing this….it's highly annoying that Schwab decided to drop this on the floor. I called them to ask why and the service person would only say grimly it's a difficult environment.". They also did it two days before they said they would, on Sept 28. I also asked whether we could expect Schwab Bank to become a credit card issuer themselves, and he said "we have no specific announcements at this time."

As a note, I have now been on hold for 11 minutes just to talk to an FIA services rep. The customer service has been lacking since the switch, and anyone notice the webpage access is spotty at best?

  • stevieD

Since customer service has always been FIA and the website has always been maintained by FIA, there should be no change in the level of customer service fir the former Schwab Visa cards.

“But I don’t expect these terms to stay unchanged for long.” Do you have any basis for this belief? Nowhere has FIA said there will be a change. Sure keep your eyes open for any announcements, but I don’t see any indication that FIA will be changing things, or do you have some other information from FIA and Bank of America?

Thanks for the note stevieD, you’re absolutely right about the customer service. That I don’t expect to change.

As for the terms, Schwab got rid of the card because it wasn’t making money for them, and that I don’t expect to change for FIA. This card was unique in that it offered above-average rewards, charges no annual fee or foreign transaction fees, and is a Visa. If this was a profitable combination, more companies would offer it.

So I would expect that unless FIA leverages this opportunity to heavily market other BofA banking products to its customers, they will have to start cutting back on some of the benefits.

Well its been over three months with FIA. Nothing has changed, yet. I still get my 2% credited monthly to my checking account (one nice change, you can direct the rebate to any account you want). Web site still looks the same, without the Schwab logos, they haven’t sent me a new card (mine expires in 2013) and customer service is the same FIA call center as always. So no news is good news for now.

Definitely, still all quiet thankfully. The lucky Schwab cardholders who got grandfathered in are still sitting pretty.

Unfortunately, I was given a new card because my old had to be canceled for fraudulent charges. And the new card is hideous :-(
