Score 75,000 American Airlines Miles Right Now with Citi AAdvantage. Maybe Even 225,000.

Post image for Score 75,000 American Airlines Miles Right Now with Citi AAdvantage. Maybe Even 225,000.

I look at travel rewards credit card deals for a good 12 hours a day, so it’s hard to impress me with a rewards offer. But this morning, a friend of mine sent over a deal so good that I actually pulled the trigger… three times!

We’ll see how things go, but I applied for three Citibank credit cards, each offering 75,000 AAdvantage miles to sign up (SHHHH!). I was immediately approved for the personal credit cards, and NerdWallet is pending approval for the third, a business credit card.

Update 1/30/2011: 75,000 miles collected twice (Visa and Amex)! 3rd card not approved due to too many applications

If you haven’t seen our awesome airline infographic – we looked at a heap of flights, compared the number of miles they require versus the cost of booking a similar flight on the cheapest Kayak result, and determined that American Airline miles are worth about 0.76 cents.

If you intend to take advantage of the offer like I did, here are a couple of tips to help maximize your reward haul:

  1. You can apply for 2 personal cards, but make sure you do it AT THE SAME TIME, otherwise the system recognizes that you are no longer a “first-time customer”
  2. If you’ve applied for similar deals in the past, you’ll need to wait anywhere from 6-12 months after you close the older account, so that Citi will consider you a first-timer again
  3. You can also apply for 1 personal and 1 business card to get the 150k miles. Some have had success just adding “, Inc” to their own names to get the business card, but rumor has it Citi is getting more strict about this
  4. If you apply for all 3, one will get rejected for “too many applications”

Citi is actually running a few different deals simultaneously through their channels:

Update 3/10/2011: Citi keeps shifting the links around, but you can still get this card by calling the 800 # below. A NerdWallet team member just received his 75,000 miles this week after spending $4,000+ in Feb.

Update 6/13/2011: It looks like Citi has started getting cagey on the huge rewards payouts, so the 75k may or may not be available when you call the number below. If not, you may be offered 40k miles instead, or the 30k offer seems to be around for the long run:

American Airlines and British Airways are both part of the OneWorld Alliance, which means that BA miles can be redeemed for flights on AA. And right now, Chase is offering a sign-up deal worth 50,000 British Airways bonus miles – 25,000 on your first purchase, and 25,000 more after you spend $2,500 in the first 3 months. I was able to receive the 75k mile offer today, 5/8/2011. It came with a free free companion ticket as well, but I’m sure there are a ton of restrictions on it. The operator told me the offer was valid for the AMEX or VISA flavors of the card.

I just got my third 75k card. I already have 2 personal cards and 150k. Called the 800#, applied for the business card, approved for the 75k offer + free companion ticket.

  • Creww3

I applied for the $75 K offer on 06/04/2011 and got approved.  Called to confirm the offer with the customer service, and voila! – indeed, it is $75 K when I will have spent $1,500 within 6 months.

  • Jillygirl55

I applied by calling the number. The only cards available were the 30K bonus miles for $750 spent, and 40K miles (I think) for $2000 spent. I applied for the 30K card and got approved right away. I received my card in about 5 days, purchased the $750 within 2 days, and within a week I had my miles posted!! Wow!
I made a mistake and didn’t apply for both cards at the same time. I tried to apply for the second card a couple of days later and was not approved. Can’t believe how fast the miles posted!

Just received the 75oo bonus mile offer after spending $4000 in 6 months plus a free companion ticket. I actually asked for the 50000 mile offer and was told I could get the 75000 mile offer at the number listed above.

  • Lwjohns1

I did the 75,000 bonus mile offer from citi and my wife did a 100,000 bonus mile offer for the same citicard visa. I only saw the 100,000 mile offer on one email, but got several emails about the 75,000 mile offer. All bonus miles posted for me and my wife though. She had to spend $750 within 3 months for the first 50,000 bonus miles and $1o,ooo within the first year to earn the final 50,000 miles. I charge around $75,000 per year between my AAdvantage citi card and my star wood preferred guest Amex card. The wife charges around $30,000 per year on her citicard.

Just called and was approved on the phone — 75000 AADV miles for the CitiAAdvantage Platinum visa card. They were unwilling or unable to process 2 applications at the same time.  So, only got one card.  $85 annual fee waived.  and $4000 to be charged on the card in the first 6 months.

  • Doug

I have gotten 3 of these cards (2 Visa signature, 1 Visa business) and now my AA account is sitting at a nice 245k miles.

    • Lbarnett88

Dont know how much longer they will give out the extra points, but its working now!
