Score 75,000 American Airlines Miles Right Now with Citi AAdvantage. Maybe Even 225,000.

I look at travel rewards credit card deals for a good 12 hours a day, so it’s hard to impress me with a rewards offer. But this morning, a friend of mine sent over a deal so good that I actually pulled the trigger… three times!

We’ll see how things go, but I applied for three Citibank credit cards, each offering 75,000 AAdvantage miles to sign up (SHHHH!). I was immediately approved for the personal credit cards, and NerdWallet is pending approval for the third, a business credit card.

Update 1/30/2011: 75,000 miles collected twice (Visa and Amex)! 3rd card not approved due to too many applications

If you haven’t seen our awesome airline infographic – we looked at a heap of flights, compared the number of miles they require versus the cost of booking a similar flight on the cheapest Kayak result, and determined that American Airline miles are worth about 0.76 cents.

If you intend to take advantage of the offer like I did, here are a couple of tips to help maximize your reward haul:

  1. You can apply for 2 personal cards, but make sure you do it AT THE SAME TIME, otherwise the system recognizes that you are no longer a “first-time customer”
  2. If you’ve applied for similar deals in the past, you’ll need to wait anywhere from 6-12 months after you close the older account, so that Citi will consider you a first-timer again
  3. You can also apply for 1 personal and 1 business card to get the 150k miles. Some have had success just adding “, Inc” to their own names to get the business card, but rumor has it Citi is getting more strict about this
  4. If you apply for all 3, one will get rejected for “too many applications”

Citi is actually running a few different deals simultaneously through their channels:

Update 3/10/2011: Citi keeps shifting the links around, but you can still get this card by calling the 800 # below. A NerdWallet team member just received his 75,000 miles this week after spending $4,000+ in Feb.

Update 6/13/2011: It looks like Citi has started getting cagey on the huge rewards payouts, so the 75k may or may not be available when you call the number below. If not, you may be offered 40k miles instead, or the 30k offer seems to be around for the long run:

American Airlines and British Airways are both part of the OneWorld Alliance, which means that BA miles can be redeemed for flights on AA. And right now, Chase is offering a sign-up deal worth 50,000 British Airways bonus miles – 25,000 on your first purchase, and 25,000 more after you spend $2,500 in the first 3 months. When combined with the 75,000 mile AA offer above, you could earn up to 200,000 miles, worth 4 domestic roundtrip flights (8 flights if you’re flexible).

Just to let you guys know, I signed up around November 10th for myself, wife and two sons in the military, they got approved for the 75,000 offer of $1500 for six months. Mine though was denied as I had too many Citicard accounts, well I wrote to the CIti Executive Review office in South Dakota and bam got a personal call from one of the VP’s reps and told the card is coming in the mail and got the same offer as the family. The Executive review dept if awesome, I got my card now and we that equals 300,000 miles for us to interchange as you can get a ticket for anyone on your points.

    • Blanca

Could you let me know the address or email of the citi executive center you applied for, I have the same problem Thanks
      Blanca

      • Mike Zulim

Blanca, just checking did you ever receive an answer from CitiBank Executive Reivew folks?

    • franl

seriously. im starting to think you made up this “awesome Executive review dept”.

citi denied me because i’ve had citi aadvantage cards before & canceled them. basically im disqualified FOR LIFE based on my soc sec #. pretty shady.. amex & chase arent in this regard.

      • http://www.nerdwallet.com Tim

@franl: It’s worth a shot. A good friend of mine had one 3 years ago and was still approved for the 75,000 offer.

        • franl

care to share how to get in contact with this mysterious “CIti Executive Review office in South Dakota”?

          • MIKE ZULIM

Here you go my friend, they approved me in only 2 weeks after I wrote them. They called me and I just re-iterated what my letter said, then she said we have approved you. Got the 75,000 pts.

  • Crush627

For those approved in the last few months… how long did it take for your miles to post?

I signed up a few weeks ago and met the spending requirement on each card. My stmts close in the next week or so. Will they post within days of stmt close?

    • Doug

Mine posted on the next statement.

I am desperately seeking the credit card that gives you 75,000 miles if you spend $4,000 in the first 4 months. Does anybody know if this offer is still valid and how do I get it??The folks who answer the 800# are saying they know nothing about it!! (Surprise!)
Please help me..I am desperate for miles!!
Thanks in advance for your help.

    • http://www.nerdwallet.com NerdWallet

Hi Alice, I just called the number and the person I spoke with verified that they are still offering it. Are you using the 800 number found at the link above?

Perhaps the person you spoke with was uninformed, maybe try back and see if you get someone who can help?

      • alice bader

what is the 800 number to call? I cant get it off the link and I called a bunch of 800 numbers. Do u have the correct one or can you direct me??
        Thanks, NerdWallet

        • http://www.nerdwallet.com NerdWallet

Sure alice, if you click the link above that says 75,000 miles, it will direct you to call this number: 1-800-408-4954

That number is subject to change, which is why we gave a link, rather than publishing the number itself.

          Hope that helps!

  • Christian

What are the perks after the 75K? How do you get more miles/points? Annual Fee? Can these be put with my AA miles? Thanks

    • http://www.nerdwallet.com NerdWallet

Hey Christian, you can read more about the card’s other perks and rewards on our Citibank AAdvantage Platinum Select page.

And yes, these are AA miles just like any others, so if you give them your AA account number when you apply for the card, they will be combined (that’s exactly what I did).

  • Simon

Just got approved for the 75k Visa Card using 1-800-408-4954. Not sure if they are offering it for the 75k Amex card. The 75k offer does include the free companion ticket voucher as well, but I don’t know the restrictions until I get it. From what i can remember from about 5 years ago, it was limited to the US 48 contiguous states, but that could’ve changed. They also said the ticket has to be of a certain economy class ticket and above 299 dollars.

I currently have two of their cards (MC and Amex) and this will be the third. The South Dakota agent had me move some of the credit limits around to accommodate the third. I have had a history of having these cards and cancelling only a few of them.

  • James

Just got the 75,000 card. No problem, and I hold the Amex and MC.

  • Thank you!

THANK YOU! I love you!!! I just called the number and got approved for the 75,000 bonus miles Visa! Vacation here I come!

  • bdmccall

The person I talked to on the phone said they do still have the offer, but that it’s only available for first time card-holders (I already have the AAMC) — so she basically said I wasn’t eligible. Anybody else run into this?

    • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ Tim

That’s common with most sign-up deals. Card companies don’t like “churners,” so they try to limit bonuses to first-time users.

However, I know that many travel reward hackers have had success by canceling their old cards and then waiting a few months before re-applying.

  • Gr8everest

    just applied calling 800-408-4954.

  • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ Tim

Here’s an insider tip for anyone with this card:

I called to cancel my card, since I got the sign-up bonus and didn’t want to stick around for the annual fee. The phone rep first tried to bribe me with an $85 statement credit, but I told him that my problem with the card was the 1-mile-per-$1 rewards program. I have a few cards paying me 2% or more, so that won’t cut it.

So then he offered me 3x miles per $1 I spend for the next 6 months. This new bonus is capped at 10,000 miles, but that’s a nice incentive for me to hold onto the card a while longer. I’ll likely call back after I’ve hit the 10k cap, threaten to cancel, and see what else they offer me :-)

    • CommishJW

      How did the story end?

      • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ NerdWallet

When I called back to cancel after 6 months, they didn’t offer me anything new, unfortunately. Seems like you can only pull that trick once!

        • CommishJW

Just finished with them. The 3X miles per $1 spend was not offered and I gave enough hints. They are giving me the $85 statement credit now although the anniversary fee is still a few months away. They are keeping me at the 1.2 miles per $1 spent (a promotion I register for every 6 months) but adding 500 bonus AA miles per month for 16 months if I spend $500 per month. Said I could still cancel the card and not pay the fee when it is charged, but the $85 statement credit is mine to keep.
