All good things must come to an end. And in the case of the Capital One Match My Miles program, a month and a half early. Back on March 10th, CapOne started offering up to 110,000 miles to new Venture Rewards Card applicants, with the program ending on May 13th. But it was so successful that they’ve already hit their stated goal and are closing it down.
A quick refresher on the promo: Capital One was offering to double the miles earned from other airline rewards cards, up to 100,000, with an additional bonus of 10,000 miles, for anyone who spent $1,000 in 90 days. An applicant who’d accumulated more than 75,000 miles with the Citibank AAdvantage card, for example, could apply for a Venture Rewards card before May 13th, submit proof of miles earned on the other airline credit card, spend the requisite money, and bam! The miles magically double, in the form of No Hassle Miles.
But, like any promotion, it came with caveats: Capital One was only giving out 1 billion miles, limiting the cost of the promotion to around $10 million.
Donezo
It’s now only April, and they’ve already run out of miles. The program was popular, and rightly so. Venture miles are incredibly flexible: they’re not tied to any one airline, or restricted to airfare at all. And if you managed to get a new airline card with a signing bonus, then turn around and sign up for the Capital One Venture Card, you could get a substantial payout in miles (see my story here).
Applicants who were already approved need not worry
Every cardholder who was approved during the promo period will still have 45 days from the account’s opening to get in their paperwork and qualify for the match (so CapOne is actually going slightly over the billion-mile mark here). And anyone who was already told that their miles are being reserved still has the rest of their 90 day window to spend that $1,000.
Rest in peace, Match My Miles. You were good to us.
