Using data from the Council for Community and Economic Research’s 2013 Annual Report, NerdWallet ranked the most affordable cities in America. The index scores listed in the table below can be compared to the national average of 100. A lower cost of living index signifies greater affordability relative to the average city. States from central and southern U.S. dominate the list.

Some notable findings include:

  • Texas leads the way in terms of affordability: 19 of the 100 cities on the list are from the Lone Star State.
  • Oklahoma, Texas’ neighbor to the north, is home to the second most number of affordable cities, with eight of the top 100.
  • The only two West Coast cities on the list are from the state of Washington.
  • The list also lacks the presence of any cities from the Northeast states as well as California, which dominate the list of most expensive cities in the U.S.
