Study: Consumers Can Save $2.6 Billion By Avoiding Pubs and Sticking to House Parties This St. Patrick’s Day
While it’s easier to throw on a little green and hit the bars, a NerdWallet study finds that those pursuing a few pints on St. Patty’s day can save 55% on beer by hosting a private party instead of going to a bar or restaurant.
While the average 6 pack of Guinness costs $10.38, or 4 pints at $2.60 per pint, the average pint of Guinness at a bar is $4.68. According to a NerdWallet analysis of Consumer Price Index data, those going out on St. Patrick’s Day face a markup of over 1.8x.
If consumers spend the projected average of $38 on the beer-heavy holiday, this extreme price gap could be costing Americans an extra $2.6 billion in a single day. So, how much beer will you get for your buck by skipping the bars and celebrating at home? Our findings show that for $38, you’ll get 14 pints at home and only 8 pints at a bar.
St. Patty’s Party Planning Tips
If you want to save a little green by partying at home this St. Patrick’s day but are tired of boring the ol’ green beer deal, here are a few tips and tricks to spice up your party and ensure everyone, drinkers and non-drinkers alike, has a happy holiday.
In 1861, London was grieving the death of Albert, the Prince Consort. Patrons filled the pubs to drown their sorrows, and one bar steward had the idea that even the champagne should be mourning. He added a dash of Guinness to a glass of champagne, and thus the Black Velvet was born. You don’t have to be in mourning to enjoy this light and surprisingly refreshing spin on Ireland’s favorite beer. Fill a champagne glass halfway with Guinness then top off with any champagne of your choice. Great for those who love the bubbly and want to add some color, flavor and a little drama to every glass.
One of the few things better than the first sip from a freshly poured pint of Guinness? The first bite into one of these delicious Guinness burgers. This recipe takes a little bit of prep-ahead work, but it’ll be well worth the work and the wait. For 4 servings, take 1 lb. of ground beef and marinate it in 2/3 cup of Guinness for at least 12 hours. When you’re ready to cook, take the meat out of the marinate, squeeze out the excess Guinness and prepare as desired. You’ll be sure to taste the tenderness and undeniable Guinness flavor in every bite!
