Let’s start with some logistics. Best Buy will open at midnight on Black Friday. To cut down on the pushing and shoving, Best Buy employees will be handing out claim tickets for the special doorbuster items up to two hours before the midnight launch.
First of all, it’s no surprise that Best Buy might have put out a preview ad. The retailers wants to catch consumer interest but also not leak its best deals too far in advance of the release of the Walmart and Target Black Friday ads.
Like every year, Best Buy discounts hundreds of electronics. The question every season, however, is how Best Buy’s price cuts compare to the discounts offered by other major Black Friday players such as Sears and Walmart.
Breakdown of the Big Ticket Electronics
Let’s start by taking a look at the TVs that will be selling at a price cut for Black Friday. The Toshiba 40″ 1080p LCD HDTV for $179.99 is an excellent buy and will be gone quickly – this item is one of the best we’ve seen so far this Black Friday season. Its twin, the Toshiba 50″ 1080p LED HDTV, will be selling for $399.99, over double the price of the 40” Toshiba but still a great value for a large LED HDTV.
These TV deals overshadow the rest of the HDTVs Best Buy has to offer – others such as the Panasonic 32″ 720p LCD HDTV and the Samsung 40″ 120Hz 1080p LED 3D HDTV for $498 just aren’t deals worth getting up early for.
On to tablets! The Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7″ 8GB Android Tablet w/ $20 Gift Card, selling for $179.99, is a great deal. The Amazon Kindle Fire HD w/ Free $30 Best Buy Gift Card is not bad – Kindles are currently retailing at $199 – as long as you’re happy with your $30 store gift card. The Apple iPad 2nd Generation 9.7″ WiFi Tablet, too, is a good deal considering you’ll rarely find deep discounts on Apple products. Remember that this isn’t the newest iPad model, however.
Best Buy’s laptops deals aren’t anything special. There’s no premium deal here for us to really highlight, but you’ll get $200 off any HP Envy laptop.
The Toshiba Smart WiFi Ready Blu-ray Player for $39.99 looks like a great deal on the surface, and it is a good price. Just bear in mind that “WiFi ready” means that you’ll probably have to get a wireless adapter if you want to take full advantage of the WiFi capability and this separate purchase will drive up the cost a little more.
Overall, the Best Buy Black Friday 2012 sale isn’t exactly what we’d like to see from a premium electronics retailer. The laptop deals aren’t impressive and the smartphone deals aren’t really worth talking about – remember to check Amazon’s phone sales if you want to get a new smartphone this year, as the online giant ran an infamous 1¢ phone deal last year – but Best Buy’s two Toshiba HDTVs are very nice and save the ad from total obscurity.
