Indie Spotlight: Lisa Spinella of Tickle and Smash and the SF Etsy Team Holiday Promotion
Successfully selling on Etsy may seem daunting, impossible and extremely competitive, but Etsy Teams allow Etsy sellers to collaborate and build communities based on common interests so sellers don’t feel so alone. Etsy Teams offer a great support system to help crafters sell on Etsy, build their business, and make friends. SF Etsy is an exemplary example of an Etsy Team that positively enriches the Etsy experience for Etsy sellers in the San Francisco Bay Area through business development workshops, networking meet-ups, cross-promotion campaigns and much more. The SF Etsy team adds a personal aspect for Etsy sellers interact in person and develop long lasting friendships and partnerships.
Right now, SF Etsy is leading an amazing Holiday Coupon Promotion to boost holiday sales and drive traffic to SF Etsy members’ shops. Twenty-eight SF Etsy members are offering great deals on their handmade products during the November and December. To find these deals, search for “SFetsyHoliday2012” in Etsy and find which handmade items are eligible for the coupon code: SFETSYHOLIDAY2012. Tell us a bit about yourself and how you got involved with SF Etsy?
I became a member of SF Etsy street team after attending an Etsy sponsored #HelloEtsy Craft Event in June of 2010 at TechShop in San Francisco. My friend had convinced me to attend – knowing I was struggling to make my Etsy store more intriguing to potential buyers. At that time, I had been a visual artist but was transitioning into making hand bags – and I was starting to acquire a lot of bags!
I was immediately impressed with SF Etsy after listening to Jen Johnson, our then, team captain, speak so inspiringly about this group of supportive, DIY, artisans who had this amazing creative voice in the Bay Area. I had met Geraldine Adams at the event (now our membership committee leader) and we became fast friends and joined together. It was wonderful knowing I wasn’t alone trying this seemingly impossible leap into small business. I knew now that there were solutions, inspirations, and role models in SF Etsy and it gave me hope that I could make this endeavor successful. Months later, to my surprise, Jen asked me to become part of the SF Etsy leadership as their social media liaison. Although its been a crazy year, its been so rewarding, creative and fun with new found friends and incredible mentors.
What are you most excited about with the SF Etsy Holiday Coupon Campaign?
I think the most exciting aspect of the SFEtsyHoliday2012 coupon event is watching the member participation grow as they find their confidence using social media. Our members have many levels of social media experience. Witnessing the members opening up Twitter accounts, joining Facebook, trying Pinterest and taking pictures with Instagram and using their hashtags is where I get the most satisfaction. Seeing them share the team’s coupons, their team member’s stores and member accomplishments is heart warming. We have just begun this coupon campaign and already I’ve seen some very creative uses of the coupon. It was our idea that grouping members in sets of four would create an instant buddy system to be an inspiration for each other and to form friendships. Its so satisfying seeing someone finding value in what you say on Twitter just by being RTed. Many times I have sent out a message via the internet just to wonder if anyone even heard me. SF Etsy is a community that builds people up, educates and shares, but more importantly, we listen.

What are the ways that SF Etsy is teaching members how to use social media?
The team has many ways if teaches members usage of social media but by far, my favorite way to reach our membership is with the weekly tweet chats. SF Etsy offers a weekly tweet chat hosted by jewelry designer, Claire Smith which anyone can attend just by following our Hashtag #SFEtsy every Tuesday at 10AM/PST on Twitter. We choose a different topic every week based on requests by our chat community. We address many issues that online sellers or artisans can relate to and we also do Etsy shop critiques. I look forward to the chat every week because of the amazing online community we have built there.
It’s hard to summarize all the work that goes into our social media for the team. The very nature of social media changes so we try to keep up with many of the social media avenues allotted to us. We host meet ups, business groups, workshops and boot camps where we always encourage social media as a viable extension of their reach. As a community we share tools, tips and encouragement almost daily. We have a very active blog committee that is constantly promoting and inspiring the team. The blog committee lead by Ashley Haak constantly offers informative and supportive posts. For example: weekly we host a “Friday Feature” of a SF Etsy team member, their work and Etsy store. The blog also offers tutorials, “Tuestorials”, on Tuesdays, which is organized by Stephanie Bolton to inspire members to explore other creative venues.
Why is social media an important marketing tool for Etsy sellers?
Social media is a significantly important marketing tool to drive traffic to your store. It just makes the world that much smaller and delivers an audience that would not have found you organically. Instagram and Pinterest are particularly interesting to me because they help brand our team’s identity. They are both fairly new and I am obsessed with using these photo driven social media sources to bring a new audience to the SF Etsy team.
What are other ways that SF Etsy helps members promote their work?
SF Etsy is pretty driven to promote the work and accomplishments of the team members. We love success stories!
Creating relationships with local companies and the crafts community in the Bay Area has led to some amazing experiences. For example our recent collaboration with Rickshaw Bags where SFEtsy members designed the bag flaps for the Rickshaw Bags zero waste messenger bag. We had a contest to pick a favorite design and we watched the event go viral. It was an amazing social media bonanza for us that led to multiple likes, followers and an amazing online reach.
SF Etsy will often RT, Share, Like, Post, Heart and Follow a SF Etsy members event or item if its spotted on any and all social media. We’ve created links, lists, an exclusive Google forum and useful Pinterest boards to both promote and encourages the team and makes their online activities easier.
