Old Navy Black Friday Deals: Wii Giveaways but Not Much More?

NerdWallet analyzes the best of Black Friday 2012. Come back for the latest news on each retailer’s Black Friday ads, from the best deals to the lamest items.

The Old Navy Black Friday ad is here and while light on apparel deals the ad scan promises big giveaways and rewards for the lucky few. Although Old Navy is open on Thanksgiving Day, the fun really begins at midnight on Black Friday when the retailer will officially open its doors to Black Friday fans, kicking off a full day of doorbusters and sales.

There will be 3 rounds of doorbusters for the earlybirds and night owls. The first is midnight to 4am, the second 4am – 8am and the third 8am – noon.

While the ad is a bit short, the real draw of Old Navy’s 2012 Black Friday sale is the giveaway of the New Super Mario Bros. U game, for the Nintendo Wii U, free with a qualifying $40 purchase. This game has a retail value of $60, so the giveaway is no slouch – but remember that supplies are expected to be very limited. The game won’t even be released in North America until Nov. 18th, as well, so this isn’t a knockoff giveaway.

Old Navy will also be giving away the new Wii U. There’s no purchase necessary to enter the giveaway, but there are only 1,000 up for grabs in the contest so good luck getting one.

Here are the actual Black Friday deals of the ad:

As you can see, there aren’t a lot of items discounted this year. This is surprising – last year, the 2011 Black Friday Old Navy ad listed 43 items, not including a free digital camera doorbuster. The 2012 ad has 9 items, not including the Wii U giveaway or the Super Mario Bros game.

What’s going on here? Is the current Old Navy Black Friday ad incomplete, or did the retailer simply scale back their Black Friday offerings? First of all, the 2012 ad does note that there’s “everything on sale” on Black Friday. You should expect many more items in your local Old Navy to be discounted on Black Friday, but the retailer not advertising them in the ad is kind of curious.

Second of all, the ad looks complete. The last page of the 2012 ad, where Old Navy lists the giveaway deals, appears very similar to the last page of the 2011 ad. It’s reasonable to conclude that we’re not missing any pages on the back end of the ad. It doesn’t seem likely that there are pages missing from the beginning of the ad, either, as the first page of what we have lists the door opening time on Black Friday and other basic details usually reserved for the front page of a Black Friday advertisement.

So is the Old Navy Black Friday ad a dud? It’s hard to say no. While the items on sale are certainly nice – our personal favorites are the fleece half-zips for $5, the Sherpa hoodies for $15 and the Adoraboots for $12 – there aren’t enough pieces advertised to make a serious shopping trip to Old Navy sound appealing.

We’ll continue to follow the Old Navy Black Friday ad and provide updates on this page. Here’s hoping we missed something and that Old Navy actually has a lot more discounted Black Friday deals in the works somewhere.
