The Pep Boys’ 2012 Black Friday ad is now out and it’s chock full of great deals on auto parts, tires and more. Pep Boys’ sale will run the length of the Black Friday weekend, Nov. 23 – Nov. 25th, but the deals in the advertisement scan are only good in-store. Depending on what you’re in the market for, it’ll be well worth your while to get over to your local Pep Boys, so if your car broke down going to Grandma’s house on Thanksgiving, relax and get to the shop. Pep Boys will be open at 6am on Black Friday and will have a few early bird specials that expire at 11am – more on that below.
We have the Pep Boys Black Friday ad scans at the bottom of this page but first, let’s take a quick closer look at the deals. Here are a few of the items that jump off the page:

There are a few special items of note – The Castrol GTX Motor Oil (5 Quarts) with Purolator Classic Oil Filter offer, going for $8 after mail-in rebate, is only good for Black Friday from 6am – 11am. Also, the Mobil 1 Synthetic Motor Oil Quart for $5, the Peak 50/50 Antifreeze & Coolant for $1 after mail-in rebate and the Prostop Brake Pads for $10.99 are all only good on Black Friday.
What We Like
There are a lot of deep discounts from many different categories. Most of the special Black Friday items fall under the automotive and tools and hardware categories, highlighting Pep Boys’ areas of great expertise, but the retailer also discounts GPS systems and a nice selection of outdoor scooters.
What We Don’t Like
First, Pep Boys has a ton of mail-in rebate items in this ad scan. Mail-in rebates can be a huge pain, so check out the Pep Boys rebate FAQs here. Here are a couple aspects of the Pep Boys rebates policies that we’re not impressed by:
- For rebates of $5 and up (which many of these Black Friday rebates are) you’ll receive a Pep Boys Visa Prepaid Card. You can use this card at any location Visa debit cards are accepted, but the card cannot be redeemed for cash and the card expires in 120 days.
- The rebate submission has to be postmarked or submitted online within 30 days of your purchase. As if you don’t have enough other things to do during the holidays, right?
- Submit your rebate immediately. Don’t chance it.
- Read the instructions carefully. Instructions for what information needs to be submitted for the rebate will vary by item.
- Keep all information from your purchase.
Watch out for products with deals that require installation from Pep Boys as well. There’s a few items discounted that require service from Pep Boys to get the full advertised discount or even the opposite – you’ll need to buy a few Pep Boys products to get a deal on installation. This is true for installation of tires and for the 50% off installation of shocks and struts coupon.
Pep Boys also doesn’t score any points for creativity. The 2012 Black Friday ad scan is very similar to the 2011 scan – both ads have the same Shelterlogic 10’ by 20’ Carport Canopy reduced to $49, with even the exact same product picture. Both ads have the same Trades Pro 24v Cordless Impact Wrench for $49 too. The list can go on here, as most items and prices will look very similar to anyone who went shopping at Pep Boys last Black Friday.
There are a couple price increases that stood out in the 2012 ad, however. The 2011 Pep Boys ad offered a 4th tire free (after mail-in rebate) after buying 3 installed tires. The 2012 ad scan lets you have a 4th tire for $1 (after mail-in rebate) after your purchase and installation of 3 tires. We see this weird $1 extra trend in the Prostop Brake Pad deal too – you’d net all Prostop Brake Pads for $9.99 in 2011, but you’ll have to shell out $10.99 to get the same Prostop Brake Pad set this year. Should we all start freaking out over inflation now?
