NerdWallet reviews the biggest Black Friday deals to give you the best advice on what to buy and what to skip. Since Black Friday is almost here, check to see if your favorite merchant’s ad has been released or leaked.
Walmart’s Black Friday ad scan is out. Released on the Walmart website, the ad scan covers 45 pages and contains 674 items. If you didn’t already know Walmart sells everything known to man, this 45 page ad scan is proof.
Walmart is splitting up their Black Friday sales into different rounds of doorbusters. The first round begins at 8pm on Thanksgiving Day, followed by the second at 10pm.
The giant retailer will also institute a “1-hour in-stock guarantee” which promises that even if an eligible item is out of stock in-store within an hour of its release, you will have the opportunity to buy a Guarantee Card. This Guarantee Card will ensure that the item ships to your store before Christmas so you can pick it up.
The 3 items eligible for the Guarantee Card are the Emereson 32” HDTV for $148, the LG Blu-ray Player for $38 and the Apple iPad2 w/ $75 gift card for $399. These items go on sale at 10pm but the in-stock guarantee allows you to purchase the Guarantee Card up to 11pm, regardless of in-store item stock.

Let’s start with a few quick logistical notes about the ad. First of all, note that the first page of the Walmart ad actually advertises “Event 2,” which starts at 10pm. The Black Friday deals actually start with Event 1, which is at 8pm.
Walmart probably chose to do this because the retailer wanted to put their “1-hour in-stock guarantee” items on the first page to highlight the guarantee. As Black Friday shoppers increasingly turn to online shopping to avoid the madness of Black Friday, having an in-stock guarantee on a few very nice items is a fine touch by Walmart.
Second, notice that while most of the items in the ad are in-store only, the last page of the ad discusses Walmart’s Thanksgiving Day sale online. There are a few deals, including a Samsung 50” Class LED 1080p 60Hz HDTV for $698 that you’ll get online.
Third, remember that the timing of the sales events – one starting at 8pm, one at 10pm and one at 5am – could be violated by overzealous shoppers. Last year Walmart stores had shrink-wrapped pallets on the floor with the items that were not yet scheduled to go live. While shoppers couldn’t get the prices at the register until the designated time, some shoppers broke the items from the shrink-wrap and took them before time. While Walmart employees will be watching to prevent this, it’s impossible to know exactly how crazy individual stores will be this Black Friday.
The Best of the Ad
This is easily one of the best ads of the year so far. With big discounts on video games, movies, CDs, TVs, laptops and more Walmart is easily living up to its reputation as one of the biggest (if not the biggest) destination for Black Friday shopping.
Some of the better deals include the “1-hour in-stock guarantee” items. The Apple iPad 2 w/ $75 gift card for $399 is a nice doorbuster.
Amongst TVs, the Vizio 60″ 1080p Smart LED WiFi HDTV for $688 is also a great buy. And for those that have been saving up for Black Friday, your efforts might be all worth it on the Sharp 70″ 1080p LED HDTV for $1798.
While the TVs might steal the show, the video games are maybe even better value. Assassin’s Creed III for Xbox 360 for $38.96 and the Skylanders Starter Pack for the same $38.96 are both great deals.
The apparel deals are steep too. There’s a ton of items under $10, even for men and women. Wrangler jeans for $9.50 is a nice price, and Jordache Color Jeans for girls will only set you back $6.00. Pants, fleeces and pullovers can all be found for under $10 as well.
Watch out for Regional Pricing and Hours
Prices will vary by region. Minimum pricing laws in states like Wisconsin and Oklahoma will make some of these deals a bit higher for shoppers in those states. Check Walmart.com to get your local Walmart Black Friday ad scan.
Additionally, Massachusetts Walmart stores may not be able to open at 8pm due to the state’s blue laws that prohibit retail employees from working on holidays. Last year, Walmart stores opened in Massachusetts at 4am.
