NerdWallet Credit Card Review: Gold from Amalgamated Chicago
This is the “Gold” version of Amalgamated Chicago’s standard card offering, which means it carries a slightly lower APR and is meant for cardholders with better credit.
The key feature of Amalgamated Chicago’s cards is the odd-sounding AmalgaMiles rewards program, where you earn 1 AmalgaMile for every dollar you spend. These miles don’t come with the same restrictions as a lot of rewards programs, since you can redeem them for credit towards any flight on any airline, with no black-out dates or any of that garbage. The program is also optional, so you can decide whether to join the AmalgaMiles program and pay the $29 annual fee, which is actually a good deal cheaper than a lot of big bank cards.
Here’s our rundown on the rewards program:
How much is an AmalgaMile from Amalgamated Bank of Chicago worth? NerdWallet estimates 1.00 cent per mile, although redemption values vary from 0.50 cents to 1.40 cents.
You can only earn up to 5,000 AmalgaMiles per month and up to 50,000 annually.
Redemption Options.
- Redeem 5,000 miles for $25 towards the purchase of any airfare, a 0.50 cent value.
- Redeem 25,000 miles for $350 towards the purchase of any airfare, a 1.40 cent value.
- Redeem 25,000 miles for a domestic roundtrip flight on an airline that is a member of the Airlines Reporting Corporation (ARC) and participates in the Amadeus Reservation System.
Expiration.
- AmalgaMiles expire 3 years after they are earned.
