Credit Card Review: Ink Cash Business

    Author:

Verdict – Given its signup bonus, its lack of an annual fee and its rewards program, the Chase Ink Cash Business offers some of the best rewards out there.

You receive 5% cash back on cable and telecom services up to $25,000 spent annually, and 2% on gas and dining up to $25,000 spent annually. The card also gives an unlimited 1% cash back elsewhere.

However, there’s a caveat to the 5% back: you only earn the bonus on bundled services, so if you purchase those services separately, you’re out of luck.

Don’t forget to evaluate the Costco Business card. The main differences are that the Costco card offers 4% back on gas instead of 2%, and 2% back on travel purchases like flights and rental cars. Keep in mind that the Costco rewards can be redeemed for cash, but not as easily; and as an American Express, the Costco card suffers from smaller acceptance.

The card has a signup bonus of $250 cash back when you spend $5,000 $100 after first purchase; another $150 when you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months*.

This is the best cash back card for dining, I get 3% back on 99% of my dining purchases. Many other cards will only give you the bonus rewards if the merchant is “properly classified” for the category but I have never had problems with my chase ink.

Unfortunately the dinging rewards were just reduced from 3% to 2%. Still a great card though!

There really isn’t any card that gives more than 2% on dining, is there? Except when Freedom has it for one of their “periods”…

      • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ NerdWallet

The Citi Forward gives 5% on dining, bookstores (including Amazon), music and movies. You’re limited to 75,000 ThankYou Points a year, but that’s $15,000 of bonus spending, so it isn’t terribly restrictive.

I think the posting here about 5% on phone and cable services is incorrect or misleading because 5% is only on bundled services.. When you review this card on Chase’s website, its says “Earn 5% cash back on the first $25,000 spent annually on office supply store purchases, cellular/landline phone services, and cable services. Cable services includes bundled TV, Internet and phone. Non-bundled internet earns 1% cash back.”

      • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ NerdWallet

Hey, thanks for the heads up! That’s a pretty important caveat, we’ll adjust accordingly.

        • Leah679

Thanks for the revision! And, thanks for the great info on this site. It helped me find the right card for my small business!

Was just reading this exchange here and I called Chase to speak at length to a senior supervisor. The bottom line is that non-bundled cable INTERNET…meaning internet purchased through your cable provider without being bundled with TV and/or phone is not covered under the 5%. BUT, if it’s bundled with Cable TV service, it is covered. However, any cell phone service, satellite radio services, traditional landline phone services (like AT&T or Verizon for example or any local carrier) and cable TV services…whether bundled with anything else or NOT….are covered under the 5%.

            • http://www.nerdwallet.com/ NerdWallet

John, thank you so much for clarifying! Have you found the unbundled Internet provision to be much of a hindrance? And it sounds like you had some difficulty getting to the bottom of the fine print…?

            • John

The unbundled internet is not a hindrance…at least for me. I don’t buy unbundled internet. It’s tied in with my cable TV and I never, personally, understood that stand-alone internet through a cable TV company (without TV) or Verizon (for example) was covered under the 5%. Basically any cable TV service or landline or cell phone in covered. If internet is bundled in somehow they’ll honor it.

            • Erika

Some areas you don’t get a choice, they are basically government sanctioned monopolies, so you have to get one service from one company and internet from another. It is supposed to be for paying the company back for running the initial hardlines/cable but it allows them to gouge you on utilities.

            • John

BTW, I was just reviewing my monthly statement for March and my points (cash back) earned off my 5% categories (Telecom, Cable and Office Supplies) was more than I expected. I crunched the numbers off my statement and it was, well, MORE than it should have been. I then remembered that my radio advertising bill had been incorrectly marked as a telecom/utility category expense when it first posted to my account. But it didn’t get too excited because I figured it would be corrected later. But it wasn’t apparently! =) 5% cash back on my radio advertising bill is not something I counted on but I’ll take it! You can’t beat that anywhere.

Now, if this gets corrected later, I won’t know for now. But if it holds, it’s a nice little surprise to say the least. So, anyone with this card who isn’t charging radio advertising to the card should try it out and see how it registers. It may just be a glitch unique to how this particular radio station identifies itself on CC transactions or it may be more common. You won’t know til you try. Best of luck.

Interesting, good to know that the error worked in your favor this time!

      • John

Does that mean my cell phone bill from AT&T for my iPhone doesn’t get 5%?

    • Rac253

To verify the account, they sent me a letter requesting information…. the letter stated they needed one set of forms. When I called to activate again (Another 40 min, 2 reps and a manager later) they asked for a different form. I’ve submitted the new forms and 2 weeks later they have yet to activate my account, after they stated I would be able to make under $500 in approved purchases this week…. my card is still getting declined….
