Changes are coming to the rewards structures on both the Prime Visa and the Amazon Rewards Visa Card, effective May 1, 2023.

Holders of the Prime Rewards card will now earn cash back in two more categories:

Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card
NerdWallet rating
  • 5% cash back on purchases made through the Chase Travel portal.

  • 2% back on local transit and commuting, including rideshares.

But the card is ditching its 2% rate at drugstores, meaning purchases there will earn just 1% back. Otherwise, the rest of its rewards structure will remain the same:

  • 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market.

  • 2% back at restaurants and gas stations.

  • 1% back on all other purchases.

The Prime Visa will retain its annual fee of $0, but you'll still need an Amazon Prime membership to get it. Membership costs $139 a year.

The Amazon Rewards Visa Card, which you can get without a Prime membership, is also getting an update to its rewards structure. Cardholders will now earn:

  • 3% back on purchases made through the Chase Travel portal.

  • 2% back on local transit and commuting, including rideshares

This version of the card, too, is nixing its 2% rate at drugstores, but as with the Prime version of the card, Rewards Visa cardholders will continue to earn 2% back at restaurants and gas stations, plus 1% back on everything else. Its $0 annual fee will also remain unchanged.
