MORE LIKE THISCredit Cards

The costs of being chauffeured by a ridesharing service like Uber or Lyft can add up if you're a frequent customer. And while you don't need a credit card to pay for rideshares, having one that offers incentives for those purchases may help offset some of the costs.

Whether you're team Uber or Lyft, consider these cards to get more value on future rides.

🤓Nerdy Tip

The Uber Credit Card was once an ideal option for Uber loyalists, but the card is no longer available. Barclays announced it was discontinuing the Uber Credit Card starting Aug. 4, 2021. (It has not been open to new applications since early 2020.) Existing cardholders were transferred to a different product in October 2021.

The Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card offers a decent ongoing 2% cash-back rate on all purchases. Earning rewards is as straightforward and simple as it gets. You don't have to keep track of rewards categories or spending caps to earn rewards.

Apple Card
NerdWallet rating

Apple Card

Our pick for: Apple enthusiasts

Card details

Rewards:

  • Up to 3% daily cash back with Apple and select merchants when you use Apple Card with Apple Pay.

  • 2% cash back on all other purchases made through Apple Pay.

  • 1% cash back on all purchases made with the physical Apple Card.

  • Terms apply.

Welcome offer: None.

Annual fee: No Fees*.

APR: The ongoing APR is 19.24%-29.49%, Variable.

Why we like it

The Apple Card earns a 3% back when you make purchases with Uber or Uber Eats through Apple Pay. That’s a hearty rate for a card that has a $0 annual fee. You also won’t have to wait to use your rewards. They are credited to your account daily, allowing you to use them faster than other rewards credit cards.

Drawbacks

The card doesn’t reward broader spending categories. To earn the highest rewards rates, you'll be limited to Apple Pay purchases. This can be an issue if some merchants don’t accept the payment method.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Uber's food delivery service, Uber Eats, is separate from the rideshare service that the company provides. If you frequently spend on food delivery services in addition to rideshare services, a card with a 2% rewards rate can prove fruitful over time. Or, if you prefer to maximize rewards, consider getting a credit card for food delivery services and one for rideshare purchases.

Annual fee: $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95.

APR: 0% intro APR for 12 months on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 19.24%-29.99% Variable APR.

Why we like it

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express earns a generous rewards rate on eligible transit purchases, including rideshare services. Since you’re not limited to just one brand in particular, you’re free to shop for the best deal when you're hailing a ride. You’ll also earn rewards in common everyday spending categories, which can add up easily.

Drawbacks

You'll have to spend enough on groceries to make up the cost of the annual fee (currently $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. Terms apply.) For a decent rate minus the annual fee, consider a credit card that offers a 2% rewards rate on all purchases.

U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Credit Card

  • 2% cash back in one "everyday" category that you choose from a smaller list.

  • 5% cash back on prepaid air, hotel and car reservations booked directly in U.S. Bank's Rewards Center.

  • 1% cash back on all other eligible net purchases.

  • Fast food.

  • Home utilities.

  • TV, internet and streaming.

  • Department stores.

  • Cell phone providers.

  • Electronics stores.

  • Sporting goods stores.

  • Movie theaters.

  • Gyms/fitness centers.

  • Furniture stores.

  • Ground transportation.

  • Select clothing stores.

Welcome offer: $200 bonus after spending $1,000 in eligible purchases within the first 120 days of account opening.

Annual fee: $0.

APR: 0% intro APR for 15 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 19.49%-29.74% Variable APR.

Why we like it

With the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card, rewards maximizers can earn a top 5% cash-back rate on ground transportation purchases (including Lyft and Uber rides) when activating that category. Unlike other credit cards that offer 5% cash back on rotating bonus categories, you’re not limited to just one bonus category that earns elevated rewards and a low flat rate on everything else. You'll get more rewards tiers that include two bonus categories, a 2% category and the low flat rate. The rewards categories are also more likely to suit your spending since you choose them from a list of options.

Drawbacks

You’ll have to remember to activate categories quarterly and use your credit card when spending in them to make rewards count.

American Express® Gold Card
NerdWallet rating

American Express® Gold Card

Our pick for: Foodies

Card details

Rewards:

  • 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent at restaurants.

  • 4 points per dollar spent at U.S. supermarkets on up to $25,000 in purchases per year.

  • 3 points per dollar spent for flights booked directly with airlines or with American Express Travel.

  • 1 point per dollar spent on other eligible purchases.

  • Terms apply.

Welcome offer: Earn 60,000 Membership Rewards® points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases with your new Card within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.

Annual fee: $250.

APR: None.

Why we like it

The American Express® Gold Card is a solid choice for foodies who frequently use Uber and dine out. As long as you can make full use of the card's benefits, it's possible to offset the $250 annual fee. The card offers up to $120 a year in Uber Cash, distributed as $10 per month when you add the card to your Uber account. Uber Cash can be applied to Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the U.S. You'll also get a $120 dining credit annually (distributed as up to $10 in statement credits monthly) when you use the card to make purchases with eligible restaurants or services. Enrollment is required. Terms apply.

Drawbacks

Uber Cash earned won’t roll over to the next month, so you’ll have to use it or lose it. The $250 annual fee also runs high. For a lower annual fee, the American Express® Green Card earns 3 points per dollar spent on eligible travel, dining and transit (including rideshare services). Terms apply.

Chase Sapphire Reserve®

Our pick for: Frequent travelers

  • 5 points per dollar spent on air travel booked through Chase.

Annual fee: $550.

APR: The ongoing APR is 22.49%-29.49% Variable APR.

Why we like it

If you're a frequent traveler who uses Lyft on your getaways, you can earn a hefty amount of points on rides with the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. You just have to make use of the card’s benefits to defray the cost of the $550 annual fee. Points are also worth 50% more when redeemed for travel through Chase. And, when you’re not using Lyft, the card's annual travel credit can cover up to $300 spent on rideshare services, trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages, to name a few.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Effective Nov. 15, 2022, Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholders will receive complimentary Lyft Pink All Access membership for two years and 50% off for their third year when they enroll. This is the highest tier membership available from Lyft and retails for $199.

Drawbacks

This card has a steep $550 annual fee. If you don’t typically spend in the card’s rewards or benefit categories to offset the cost, the $95-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns rewards in similar categories, including 5 points per $1 spent on Lyft through March 2025. If you prefer an everyday card that earns travel rewards with a $0 annual fee, consider the Chase Freedom Unlimited®. It earns 5% back on travel purchased through Chase, 3% back at restaurants, including takeout and eligible delivery services, 3% back on drugstore purchases and 1.5% cash back on everything else. Through March 31, 2025, it also earns 5% back on qualifying Lyft services purchased through the Lyft app.

  • 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked with American Express Travel.

  • 2 points per dollar on other eligible travel expenses booked with American Express Travel.

Annual fee: $695.

APR: None (see rates and fees for Pay Over Time).

Why we like it

The Platinum Card® from American Express offers rich rewards on travel and a full suite of benefits that can make up for the cost of its sizeable $695 annual fee. Among the benefits included is a credit of up to $200 a year for Uber. The credits are issued monthly, providing you with up to $15 each month and $35 in December to use on rides or Uber Eats orders in the U.S. As an added bonus, if you live in an eligible city, you’ll get Uber VIP status, which can offer you exclusive perks and discounts and matching with top-rated drivers. Terms apply.

Drawbacks

The card’s long list of benefits, such as the statement credit for Equinox gyms, may not match your spending. If that's the case, you’ll lose opportunities to make up the cost of the pricey $695 annual fee. Terms will apply to the card's different benefits.

Bilt World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card

Bilt World Elite Mastercard Credit Card
NerdWallet rating

Our pick for: Renters

Card details

Rewards:

  • 5 points per dollar spent on Lyft (when you link accounts).

  • 3 points per dollar spent on dining.

  • 2 points per dollar spent on travel.

  • 1 point per dollar spent on rent (up to 100,000 points in a calendar year).

  • 1 point per dollar spent on other purchases.

Welcome offer: None.

Annual fee: None.

APR: See Terms.

Why we like it

The $0-annual fee Bilt World Elite Mastercard® Credit Card allows you to earn rewards when you pay rent on the card, for no transaction fees. Even if you don't live in a Bilt-affiliated rental, if you hold the card you can still use their app to pay your rent without a transaction fee, and your landlord will receive a paper check in the mail from Bilt. And it doesn't stop with rent — the card earns respectable rewards on popular spending categories like dining and travel, plus added perks like cellular telephone protection. Bilt points can be redeemed in a variety of ways including rent, future home down payment and travel.

Drawbacks

You’ll have to make five purchases per month with the Bilt card to be eligible to earn rewards (though you will still earn 250 points on rent payments). There's no minimum purchase requirement so it shouldn't be too much of a hurdle, but it does mean you'll have to use the card for more than just rent each month. The card is also noticeably absent any bonus for new cardholders.
