Liberty Mutual earned 4 stars out of 5 for overall performance. Liberty Mutual pet insurance offers a wide range of coverage for cats and dogs, including an accident-only plan and a plan with wellness coverage. Note: Coverage options and availability may vary depending on where you live and the age and breed of your pet.

Liberty Mutual pet insurance plans and coverage

Liberty Mutual offers three plans for pet owners to choose from. To qualify for coverage with Liberty Mutual, your pet must have had a comprehensive vet examination within the last 12 months.

Accident-only

This plan will cover treatment related to sudden injuries and accidents, but not illness. Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan covers:

  • Treatment for injuries.

  • Euthanasia and anesthesia when performed by a veterinarian for an injury.

  • Up to two treatments per year if your pet eats a foreign object.

  • Burial and cremation expenses.

Accident and illness

Liberty Mutual’s accident and illness plan covers everything the accident-only plan does, as well as:

  • Treatment for a covered illness.

  • Congenital health conditions, including hip dysplasia.

  • Behavioral therapy performed by a veterinarian (except in Florida and Alaska).

  • Alternative medicine like hydrotherapy and acupuncture (except in Florida and Alaska).

Accident, illness and wellness

The accident, illness and wellness plan includes everything the other two plans do, plus:

  • Prescription medications.

  • Flea and tick prevention.

  • Dietary food and supplements.

  • Wellness exams.

  • Dental cleaning.

  • Vaccinations.

  • Deworming.

What’s not covered

Depending on your state, Liberty Mutual’s pet insurance may not cover:

  • Breeding.

  • Osteoarthritis.

  • Any condition that could have been prevented by sterilization.

  • Obesity that is not due to a medical condition.

  • Eye or ear issues related to age.

Liberty Mutual’s accident-only plan will not cover any illness-related care for your pet.

Liberty Mutual coverage options

Deductibles: A pet insurance deductible is the amount you need to pay toward your vet bills before your insurer starts reimbursing you. Liberty Mutual offers three annual deductible options for its accident-only and accident and illness plans: $250, $500 or $1,000. If you purchase a plan that includes wellness coverage, no deductible is required for preventive care claims.

Reimbursement amounts: Liberty Mutual pet insurance offers reimbursement rates of 70%, 80% or 90%.

Coverage limits: Liberty Mutual has three coverage limit options: $5,000, $10,000 and $15,000.

Restrictions and waiting periods

Age restrictions: Liberty Mutual has no upper age limit for cats and dogs and allows you to insure your pet at 8 weeks.

Waiting periods: A waiting period is the time between when you buy your policy and when your coverage begins. Liberty Mutual policies have a 14-day waiting period for all claims, including wellness.

Methodology

Pet insurance star ratings

NerdWallet’s pet insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, scope of coverage, the ability to customize your plan and more. Our “consumer experience” category looks at factors such as website transparency and mobile app ratings. To calculate each insurer’s star rating, we adjusted the scores to a curved 5-point scale. See our full pet insurance methodology.

These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines.

Pet insurance sample rates

To find sample pet insurance rates, NerdWallet gathered quotes for the base level of accident and illness coverage on each insurer’s website. Quotes reflect the monthly cost of a policy and do not include wellness coverage or other optional add-ons. Each plan for a given company had the same deductible, coverage limit and reimbursement rate for all sample pets.
