Here’s what you need to know.
1. It serves 48 states
American Van Lines has a broad geographic footprint, handling moves in all U.S. states except Hawaii and Alaska. While long-distance moves across state lines are the company's focus, it also handles local moves and corporate relocations, among other services.
2. A deposit is required
Most major moving companies don't charge an upfront deposit. However, American Van Lines requires a deposit of 10% to 50%, depending on the type of move, according to Anthony DiSorbo, owner of American Van Lines. You'd have to cancel at least seven business days before your move to get that deposit refunded, a relatively stringent cancellation policy compared with other major moving companies.
3. Quotes aren't instant
You can't get an instant ballpark quote online with American Van Lines, as is the case with some movers. You can request a quote online, though, and a representative will follow up to provide more information and arrange a walk-through of your home, if necessary.
To request an estimate, you'll have to provide contact information and some details about your move, such as:
Timing: Enter your desired moving date.
Size of your move: Choose whether you have a house or apartment and select the number of bedrooms.
Distance: Enter the ZIP code of where you’re moving from and where you’re moving to.
Name and phone number: Enter your name, phone number and email address so the company can contact you with a quote.
Alternatively, you can call the company during regular business hours and ask for more information.

4. You can finalize your quote with a walk-through
With American Van Lines, you can finalize your quote with a walk-through of your home, which can be done by video or in person.
If you opt for a virtual estimate, you can make a video of your household belongings and share it with the movers. Your quoted price is guaranteed as long as the video includes all of the items you want to move, according to DiSorbo.
5. Add-on services are available
Like many full-service moving companies, American Van Lines offers several add-on services including:
Professional packing of your items.
Fine arts, antiques and piano relocation.
You can book these services at the same time as your move for an extra cost.
