Nerdy takeaways
  • The value of All Nippon Airways (ANA) miles is 2.8 cents each.

  • You get the best value from ANA Mileage Club miles when you book close to departure.

Based out of Tokyo and a member of the Star Alliance, All Nippon Airways is one of the more popular international carriers for travel enthusiasts to have miles with.

With that, you might be wondering about the value of ANA miles. Based on our most recent analysis, the short answer is that they're worth 2.8 cents each.

This is a baseline value, drawn from real-world data on hundreds of economy routes, not a maximized value. In other words, you should aim for award redemptions that offer 2.8 cents or more in value from your ANA miles.

What does this value mean?

Our estimated value of 2.8 cents per ANA mile provides a lower-end value you can use to determine the relative value of your own redemptions. It is based on comparing main cabin fares, using both cash and miles, across several dates and destinations.

In other words, this is the value you can expect to get from your ANA MileageClub miles without seeking particularly high-value redemptions. This means you can get more value by looking for sweet spots and using more advanced award techniques. It also means you can end up getting lower value than this if you’re not careful.

How to convert ANA miles to dollars

With the calculator below, you can figure out how much your ANA miles are worth in dollars based on our estimated value.

When is the best time to use ANA miles?

In our analysis, we found that you get the best value from ANA Mileage Club miles when you book close to departure. We compared awards booked 15 days to departure with awards booked 180 days to departure. We also checked flights during peak winter holiday travel.

For economy awards

For ANA economy awards, we found that you'll get an above-average 3.0 cents per mile when booking 15 days to departure and a below-average 2.4 cents per mile when booking 180 days out. Holiday flights were the same as the baseline valuation — which is 2.8 cents-per-mile for economy awards.

How flexible are ANA miles?

In addition to ANA flights, ANA Mileage Club miles can be redeemed for awards on any of the 26 members of the Star Alliance. Plus, ANA partners with 10+ airlines outside of the Star Alliance — including carriers like Alitalia and Vietnam Airlines.

ANA charges only 88,000 Mileage Club miles round-trip for business class partner awards between the U.S. and Europe. That's such a great deal that this makes our list of the five cheapest business class awards to Europe. Other ANA Mileage Club sweet spots include business class awards between the U.S. and Japan for just 90,000 miles round-trip, or to Africa or the Middle East for 104,000 miles round-trip.

How did we determine the ANA miles value?

We collected hundreds of data points comparing the cash value to award (mile) value for the same routes and dates. That is, we compared the cost of a given ticket in either cash or miles, across many tickets.

This method differs from others in that it looks at actual redemptions rather than hypothetical, maximized redemptions. The advantage of this approach is that it provides a real-world indication of how much these miles are worth, on average. That said, it doesn’t take into account the high-value redemptions that points enthusiasts seek.
