Which Hotel Elite Status Should You Pursue in 2022?

Here's a look at what the major elite status programs require and what they offer in 2022.

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This may influence which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money.

Looking for a little hotel elite status? There’s just something special about waltzing into an upgraded hotel room after finishing your free breakfast.

Although the benefits of elite status vary depending on your preferred loyalty chain, each program requires that you earn a certain amount of credits in order to snag some recognition. Take a look at the different brands and which hotel elite status you should pursue in 2022.

Accor Live Limitless, or ALL

If you already have elite status

ALL members who held elite status in 2021 have had a complimentary extension through Dec. 31. This means if you were a Gold member in 2021, you’ll keep that Gold status through the end of 2022.

If you hope to earn status

ALL doesn’t have its own U.S. co-branded credit card, nor does it feature the ability to earn elite status through any type of shortcut. Instead, you’ll have to do it the hard way — by staying in hotels.

Details regarding ALL elite status requirements.

10 nights or when you spend $880 (800 euros).

30 nights or when you spend $3,082 (2,800 euros).

60 nights or when you spend $6,164 (5,600 euros).

When you spend $11,470 (10,400 euros).

Why choose Accor Live Limitless?

Accor is a fairly well-known hotel chain outside the U.S., with brands such as Sofitel and Fairmont to its name. You’ve likely found one or two of its properties in most European capitals, but its footprint in the U.S. is largely limited.

Still, earned elite status can offer some pretty sweet perks, such as free breakfast on the weekend and a suite night upgrade.

The bottom line: ALL offers good benefits for international travelers but isn’t much help for those sticking closer to home.

Best Western Rewards

If you already have elite status

Best Western elites can enjoy their current status level through March 31, 2024.

If you hope to earn status

Why choose Best Western Rewards?

Although easy to acquire, Best Western elite status doesn’t offer much. Still, the ability to earn increased bonus points and late checkout makes it worth it if you already have elite status in another program.

The bottom line: An easy status match program makes Best Western elite status a no-brainer, despite its limited rewards.

Choice Privileges

If you already have elite status

Those who currently have elite status in the Choice Privileges program are given no special accommodations toward earning elite status into 2023.

If you hope to earn status

Unlike other programs, Choice is not offering reduced elite status qualification requirements in 2022. The top-tier Diamond status will take 40 full nights to acquire.

However, Choice will also match your elite status in another program once per lifetime. The program also offers the ability to jump up to Diamond status with a qualifying Cambria stay.

Why choose Choice Privileges?

Although elite status isn’t super rewarding with Choice Privileges, this is one of the few programs that doesn’t upcharge for reward redemptions on suites. You’ll also find a wide variety of hotels in the Choice portfolio, including plenty of budget-friendly options.

The bottom line: Elite members with Choice don’t have a ton of benefits besides earning extra points, but it’s worth status matching if you’re staying at a Choice hotel sometime this year. Citi ThankYou points transfer to Choice, so getting elite status might make the most sense for people who can earn Citi ThankYou points, transfer the points to Choice and book award stays at Choice properties.

Hilton Honors

If you already have elite status

Hilton opted in late 2021 to extend elite status for all existing members until March 31, 2023, giving members another full year to enjoy status.

If you hope to earn status

Hilton has chosen to reduce requirements for elite status earned in 2022, meaning that members can achieve status after just seven nights.

You can also acquire Hilton elite status by holding a variety of credit cards, including The Platinum Card® from American Express, the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card and the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card. Terms apply.

Why choose Hilton Honors?

Hilton’s loyalty program offers some of the most generous benefits for lower-level members, including complimentary breakfast starting at the Gold level. Hilton members also have plenty of choice when it comes to properties, with more than 6,700 hotels worldwide.

The bottom line: Although it’s easier to earn status in 2022 than other years, members can get the same benefit — even top-tier Diamond elite status — by holding one of a handful of different credit cards.

IHG One Rewards Club

If you already have elite status

IHG has automatically extended elite status for all its members through February 2023.

If you hope to earn status

IHG completely overhauled the requirements for earning status in 2022 and revamped its tier system.

If you’d rather gain your status via a credit card, the IHG® Rewards Premier Credit Card offers complimentary Platinum elite status to all cardholders.

Why choose IHG One Rewards?

You’ll find every sort of hotel within IHG’s portfolio, including plenty of properties located on U.S. military bases. And although it doesn’t offer as many benefits to its elite members, IHG’s status is simple to acquire.

The bottom line: IHG revamped its program in March, and still, the ability to gain status via a credit card makes this a no-brainer for anyone who travels to IHG hotels at least once a year.

Marriott Bonvoy

If you already have elite status

Marriott has chosen to extend elite status for all its members through February 2023, whether earned in 2019, 2020 or 2021.

If you hope to earn status

Marriott has reverted to standard elite qualification levels. However, like Hilton, you can also gain elite status by holding one of several credit cards. This includes options such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, which grants you Gold elite status (enrollment required), and the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card, which grants you Platinum elite status. Terms apply.

Most co-branded Marriott credit cards will grant you 15 elite night credits per year and the ability to jump to Gold elite status if you meet a certain spending threshold. Chase’s Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card, for instance, allows you to earn an additional elite night credit for every $5,000 you spend. That’s in addition to the 15 you receive automatically every year you renew the card.

Why choose Marriott Bonvoy?

As the largest hotel chain in the world, Marriott hotels span 131 different countries. Along with a handful of co-branded credit cards and strong transfer partnerships, this makes earning and using Marriott Bonvoy points very easy.

The bottom line: Although Marriott won’t give you top-tier status from a credit card, you can get halfway there with credit cards alone. Marriott could easily be one of the most rewarding elite status programs because of how easy it is to find participating properties.

World of Hyatt

If you already have elite status

Hyatt has made no special adjustments for existing elite members in 2022. Even so, it was named the best hotel elite status to qualify for in 2022 in our recent analysis.

If you hope to earn status

Hyatt has gone back to its standard elite requirements, meaning you’ll need to stay 60 nights in order to achieve top-tier Globalist status. This is significant, but Hyatt rewards its most loyal members generously. Globalists pay no resort fees — ever — and receive complimentary upgrades to suites upon check-in.

The World of Hyatt Credit Card offers complimentary Discoverist elite status and five elite night credits to cardmembers each year, along with the ability to earn two credits for every $5,000 spent.

Why choose World of Hyatt?

Despite its limited footprint compared to other hotel chains, Hyatt has been busy fueling expansion over the last few years. As a result, members now have over 1,150 different options when selecting hotels.

The bottom line: Hyatt is growing while still rewarding its top-tier members, and it has some of the highest-valued points among hotel loyalty programs. If you can swing it, Globalist elite status will grant you thousands of dollars in benefits during your stays.

The bottom line

The most worthwhile hotel loyalty programs have elite perks that show they value their repeat customers. Still unsure of your next step? See how hotel elite status offerings are shaping up in 2022.
