Does health insurance cover ambulance bills?

I recently found it necessary to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. Now, after just 10 days, the ambulance service billed me for the entire amount. They told me that neither Medicare nor my secondary insurer covered the service. Does that make sense? I thought that they'd at the very least cover a portion of the costs.

Most insurances do cover ambulance transports and the benefits are usually tied to medical necessity. For medical transportation providers, they are required to demonstrate that the transport meets the definition of the type of transportation provided, i.e. Emergency, Non Emergency and was reasonable for the condition at the time of transport.
