It’s no secret that big banks sometimes charge high fees and offer low interest rates. U.S. Bank, the country’s fifth-largest by assets, is no exception. But what this institution does well is provide convenient access to thousands of physical branches and ATMs.

Checking

3.5

U.S. Bank offers seven types of checking accounts, from a basic account to options for students and people who exclusively use debit cards instead of checks, as well as an interest-bearing account for seniors. There are also silver and gold packages designed for those who have other accounts at the bank, and an additional interest-earning account.

The basic account is Easy Checking. It has a monthly fee of $8.95, or $6.95 if you opt for online statements. To get the charge waived, make monthly direct deposits of at least $1,000 total or maintain an average account balance of $1,500.

U.S. Bank offers free access to more than 4,700 U.S. Bank ATMs nationwide. But if you go outside of the network, the bank charges a $2.50 transaction fee, in addition to whatever the ATM’s owner may charge (unless it’s a MoneyPass ATM, in which case there’s no surcharge from the ATM operator).

Don't use this bank.
Don't use this bank. I needed to close my second which had a zero balance on it to refinance our home loan to take advantage of the low interest rates. We have had a second for 2.5 years and they wanted to charge me the $500 because they were not willing to let me keep it open. To make it worse we went in to a branch 3 times and the teller was so rude to us as we were trying to see if we had any options to keep the second open and not be charged for a zero balance account. After the third visit we paid the $500 and then I asked for a bank statement or account closed form to give to my loan officer which I had provide and he still would not even do that for me. I asked if he could email me on their letterhead showing the account was closed. He also told me no. I cannot believe the poor customer service. I am going to close my checking and will never use USBank for anything again.

Worst experience ever.
I had my account closed on the 1st of the month, called the bank and spoke with the rep and they said my check was sent out on the 9th, o finally recieved the check on the 26th. I went to the branch to cash the check and they wouldn't cash it as it was on hold because they sent the wrong amount. Why is that my fault? I'm being penalized with a 3 day notice to quit at my house because I haven't paid rent. Thank you US Bank. I will never have anything nice to say about your horrible bank.
