Overall

3.0

It’s no secret that big banks sometimes charge high fees and offer low interest rates. U.S. Bank, the country’s fifth-largest by assets, is no exception. But what this institution does well is provide convenient access to thousands of physical branches and ATMs.

Checking

3.5

U.S. Bank offers seven types of checking accounts, from a basic account to options for students and people who exclusively use debit cards instead of checks, as well as an interest-bearing account for seniors. There are also silver and gold packages designed for those who have other accounts at the bank, and an additional interest-earning account.

The basic account is Easy Checking. It has a monthly fee of $8.95, or $6.95 if you opt for online statements. To get the charge waived, make monthly direct deposits of at least $1,000 total or maintain an average account balance of $1,500.

U.S. Bank offers free access to more than 4,700 U.S. Bank ATMs nationwide. But if you go outside of the network, the bank charges a $2.50 transaction fee, in addition to whatever the ATM’s owner may charge (unless it’s a MoneyPass ATM, in which case there’s no surcharge from the ATM operator).

DONT BANK WITH US BANK
Been baking with them for over a decade. Had Checking/Savings account which is used EXTREMELY frequently. Pretty much daily. For no reason they could give me, no warning they canceled/closed my account. Had to go to the local branch. This was on a Wednesday. The reopened it but we got screwed because my husband got paid on a thursday and they said we wouldnt get access to it till the account was reopened on Friday. We had no food or groceries, mortgage was due and all they could say was sorry someone screwed up! At least give me the money we need to survive if your not getting my account activated immediately! They can close it like that but it takes days to reopen. Getting our tax refund in a few days too and now were going to bank elsewhere FOR SURE!

Website almost as bad as a credit union
Let us be very clear, we did not choose to be U.S.Bank "customers" -- our mortgage was purchased by this 3rd-tier "institution". The primary complaint is that they do not follow their own policies on the application of principal payments. In a thinly veiled attempt to discourage loan balance monitoring, more often than not, the U.S.Bank Website is "unavailable". However, they do proceed undaunted in sending postal mail offers soliciting refinance options at unattractive rates.
