As of May 2023, the rewards structure on the Prime Visa has changed. For up-to-date information, see NerdWallet's review of the card.

Whole Foods, the organic supermarket known for its prices and lush produce, just got a little more affordable for holders of the Prime Visa.

The card now earns 5% back on Whole Foods purchases, the first time it has extended a rate this high on purchases beyond Amazon. (If you're not an Amazon Prime member and have the lower-tier Amazon Rewards Visa Card, you'll now earn 3% back on Whole Foods purchases, the same rate you get on Amazon purchases.)

The Prime Visa has an annual fee of $0, but to hold it you must have an Amazon Prime membership, which costs $119 annually. (EDITOR'S NOTE: As of February 2022, the annual cost of an Amazon Prime membership rose to $139 a year.)

The card already earns 5% back on Amazon purchases as well as 2% back at restaurants, gas stations and drugstores, along with 1% back on everything else, making it a competitive card for budget-conscious consumers.

Rewards can be redeemed at Amazon and appear automatically in your Amazon account, so you can apply them at checkout.

“We are excited to launch the Amazon Rewards Visa Card in our stores, offering benefits to our customers on all of their purchases at Whole Foods Market,” Whole Foods co-founder and CEO John Mackey said in a statement announcing the news.

Shoppers can also access credits and cash back at Whole Foods through other credit cards that offer elevated rewards on groceries.

This new offer from the Prime Visa provides one more way to lower your grocery bill, even when you're bringing home bags full of organic goodies.

Amazon.com acquired Whole Foods Market in 2017.
