As businesses across the U.S. adapt their daily operations to follow stay-at-home orders in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, at least one business card issuer is adjusting its rewards program.

On March 31, 2020, corporate card issuer Brex announced it would offer customers who have the Brex Card a choice to opt in to new bonus categories geared toward those working from home for a limited time. Instead of focusing on travel and dining, the bonus categories now reward spending on remote collaboration tools and food delivery.

Brex also added valuable new discounts across all its cards for certain remote-work-friendly services. These changes are positive for eligible cardholders who are working from home — and, perhaps, a promising sign that other issuers might make similar adjustments.

What's new?

Rewards categories

You can now opt in to new bonus rewards categories on the Brex Card for a limited time by sending an email to Brex customer support (more on that later). According to the issuer, you can switch back to the old rewards at any time, and the new rewards will automatically revert back on Sept. 30, 2020. Here's a look at the new categories:

Old rewards: Brex Card

New opt-in rewards: Brex Card

For those who use multiple cards to cover business expenses:

  • 1 point per dollar on all purchases.

For those who use this as their only business credit card:

  • 7 points per dollar spent on rideshares and taxis.

  • 4 points per dollar on travel booked through the Brex portal.

  • 3 points per dollar spent on restaurants.

  • 2 points per dollar on recurring software expenses.

  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

For those who use multiple cards to cover business expenses:

  • 1 point per dollar on all purchases.

For those who use this as their only business credit card:

  • 7 points per dollar on remote collaboration tools.

  • 3 points per dollar on food delivery.

  • 2 points per dollar on recurring software.

  • 1 point per dollar on all other purchases.

As the table shows, regardless of which rewards structure you choose, bonus rewards are still available only to those who make the Brex Card their only company card; it offers only 1 point per dollar spent if you spread spending across multiple cards.

But the new categories are much more useful for folks running their business from home. Here's how Brex describes them:

  • Remote collaboration tools: These include expenses for the video-conferencing platform Zoom, the instant-messaging platform Slack, the video-conferencing platform GoToMeeting, market intelligence app Gong and remote work collaboration app Monday.com.

  • Food delivery: This includes delivery service apps such as Caviar, DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub and Seamless.

These changes could be valuable for companies that spend plenty in these categories in the coming months. And if they're not, you don't have to opt in to them — you can just keep earning the same rewards.

Partner offers

Aside from ongoing rewards, Brex also features one-time discounts with certain vendors. These deals are accessible to all Brex cardholders. Now, the issuer has added more, including up to $100,000 in credits for the cloud platform Amazon Web Services (depending on company funding), 25% off Slack for an annual subscription and 50% off the annual Dropbox Business Standard subscription, which gets you five terabytes of file storage. Previous offers, like 20% off a Zoom annual subscription, are also still available.

What's the same?

The Brex Card remains very different from small-business credit cards. As before, it doesn't require a personal guarantee — that is, the cardholder isn't personally liable for the debt accrued — and it needs to be paid in full at the end of each billing cycle.

And it still isn’t easy to qualify for; among other requirements, self-funded businesses need to maintain a balance of $100,000 in their business bank account at all times to qualify.

How to get the new rewards

Current cardholders will need to contact [email protected] to enroll in the new rewards program. It's not automatic. If you use an email with a domain name tied to your business, the issuer says it will know which account to update.

And again, to be eligible, you'll have to use only the Brex Card as a business card; you can't use multiple cards. If you don't opt in to the new rewards, you'll continue to earn the old rewards, the issuer confirms.
