The third-quarter bonus categories for the Chase Freedom® are here, and they could make your summer road trip a bit more rewarding.
From July 1 to Sept. 30, 2018, the card’s 5% cash-back categories will be:
- Gas stations
You can earn 5% cash back in these categories on up to $1,500 in combined purchases (1% back after that) throughout Q3. You’ll have to activate the categories on your card, which you can do by going to the Chase Freedom® activation page.
This is the first time the ride-sharing app Lyft and Walgreens have been specific bonus categories for the Chase Freedom® (although the card has previously offered 5% back at drugstores, which included Walgreens).
This year, gas was already featured as a category in Q1. Even if it isn’t your largest household expense, this category is still a helpful boost for those planning to hit the road in the coming months.
Here’s what you can do to make the most of these categories:
- Sign up for Chase Pay and Shell Fuel Rewards. By linking your Shell loyalty account to Chase Pay and paying that way, you could rake in more savings on top of the 5% cash-back rewards you’ll get with your Chase Freedom®, Chase confirms. Terms apply.
- Change your payment preferences on Lyft. If you already have Lyft, open your app, tap on your profile picture and click “Payment.” Make sure the Chase Freedom® is added as your default payment card so you can rack up those rewards. (If you don’t have the Lyft app, you can download it for free.)
- Collect both Delta miles and cash back on Lyft rides. In addition to the rewards earned on your card, you can get Delta SkyMiles by registering your Chase Freedom® online for this offer. This is an easy way to rake in more miles at no extra cost.
- Pick up your basics at Walgreens. Next time you’re shopping for basic household items — such as snacks, light bulbs or paper towels — drop by Walgreens first to earn those bonus rewards. If Walgreens doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for, you can buy a gift card there to spend at a place that has what you need and earn 5% back that way.
