If experimenting in the kitchen is your favorite hobby, finding credit card offers that provide good rewards on groceries is probably a top priority. Luckily, you have the Nerds on your side to help – we’ll point you to the major credit cards that give extra cash back on every supermarket dollar you spend.
Ready to get started? Here are the best credit cards to apply for if you’re a home cook:
Best overall: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express
What’s more, you’ll get started with a signup bonus: Limited Time Offer: Apply by 5/3/17 – Earn 10% cash back on purchases at U.S. Restaurants in the first 6 months, up to $200 back. Earn $150 back after you spend $1,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 3 months. Terms Apply.
Unlike our other two picks (see below), the Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express does charge an annual fee of $95. But don’t be turned off – most home cooks are likely to spend enough on groceries each year to come out ahead because the card’s rewards rate is so high.
Best if you’re also a big Amazon shopper: Sallie Mae MasterCard
Purchasing new kitchen gadgets is par for the course when you’re expanding your recipe repertoire. If you usually rely on Amazon for these items, you should consider the Sallie Mae MasterCard.
With it, you’ll earn 5% cash back on gas and groceries, up to $250 per month spent on each. You’ll also earn 5% cash back on up to $750 per month in bookstore spending, and, yes, Amazon counts as a bookstore. On all other purchases, you’ll earn 1% cash back.
Contrary to what a lot of folks believe, you don’t have to have a Sallie Mae student loan to take advantage of the great perks this card has to offer. You can use your rewards to pay off your student debt, but you can also redeem it into your Upromise account or simply request a statement credit.
The Sallie Mae MasterCard comes with a small signup bonus: $25 Cash Bonus - after first purchase, made within 90 days of account opening. And since its annual fee is $0, it’s a low-cost option to keep on hand.
Best if you’re also a Bank of America® customer: BankAmericard Cash Rewards™ Credit Card
