Admit it: You love getting a bonus. After all, what’s better than earning a little something extra for your loyalty or hard work?
If this sounds familiar and you’re in the market for a travel credit card, we have good news. There are several cards out there that provide a points bonus or dividend, on top of the rewards you’re already earning. Ready to learn more? Take a look at the Nerds’ top picks below.
If you want a stellar rewards rate: Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®
The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® is one of our all-time favorite travel credit cards. With it, you’ll earn 2 miles for every dollar you spend. Each mile is worth $.01, which brings the rewards rate on the card to a full 2%. You also get 5% of your miles back when you redeem them.
Speaking of redeeming, one of the best features of the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® is its flexible structure for cashing in your miles. You simply go online and book your travel as you normally would, reserving through any airline, hotel chain, discount travel site, etc. Then, with a few clicks, you pay yourself back with your miles in the form of a statement credit. It doesn’t get much easier than that.
The Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® will welcome you with a big sign-up bonus: Enjoy 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days — that's enough to redeem for a $400 travel statement credit toward an eligible travel purchase. Also, it charges no foreign transaction fee and comes chip-enabled with PIN capability. This will minimize the cost of using the card abroad and ensure almost universal acceptance.
Keep in mind that the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard® does charge an annual fee of $0 for the first year, then $89. But with all the great features this card has to offer, we think the annual fee is a small price to pay.
If you don’t want to pay an annual fee: Bank of America® Travel Rewards Credit Card
With this card, you’ll earn 1.5 points on every dollar you spend. Points are worth $.01 each, which means you’re getting a 1.5% rewards rate. That’s significantly higher than the industry standard of 1%, so this card is already ahead of the pack.
Nerd note: If you’re a Bank of America® banking customer, you’ll have the opportunity to earn a points dividend of 25%, 50% or 75% through the Preferred Rewards program. The bonus you’ll receive depends on the type of account you have and the total amount of your assets. But even if you don’t qualify for Preferred Rewards status, just having a Bank of America® checking or savings account will give you a boost: You’ll get a 10% dividend on the points you earn.
As with the Barclaycard Arrival Plus® World Elite Mastercard®, you can book your travel however you choose with the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, then pay yourself back with your points in the form of a statement credit. This means you can find the best deal out there on your airfare and hotel and still be able to use your rewards.
Again, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card charges a $0 annual fee. It also charges no foreign transaction fee and comes chip-enabled. Plus, you’ll start off with a decent sign-up bonus: 20,000 online bonus points if you make at least $1,000 in purchases in the first 90 days of account opening - that can be a $200 statement credit toward travel purchases.
No matter where your next journey takes you, the Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card will be an inexpensive and easy-to-use companion!
