With the new year approaching, it’s time to save for your next vacation. It might not be in the cards for you to splurge on an all-inclusive resort or an African safari, but you can stretch your travel budget by visiting one of Lonely Planet’s “best value” destinations for 2018.
These top picks for frugal travelers include under-the-radar cities such as Tallinn, the fashionable capital of Estonia, and La Paz, Bolivia — both places where you can spend less than $30 per day.
“Tallinn is our top value choice,” says Alex Howard, managing editor for Lonely Planet’s U.S. magazine. “It’s easily accessible by plane and ferry, great to explore on foot and offers excellent value food and accommodation to travelers.”
Lonely Planet recognizes Arizona for its wide range of affordable outdoor activities.
“It’s easy to find cheap hotels or camp in Arizona, and there are so many incredible and affordable experiences all over the state, like hiking to Havasu Falls or visiting Antelope Canyon,” Howard says.
There are many ways to save on travel, including booking flights at the right time and upgrading your travel credit card, but choosing a destination where you can get more bang for your buck is an important first step.
Do your research on the overall value of your destination — such as the cost of transportation, dining and lodging, as well as the currency exchange rate — before you commit.
Most of us have a finite travel budget, so make the most of yours.
