Best BJ’s Black Friday Deals from 2012

Now let’s take a look at BJ’s ad for Black Friday last year. Instead of presenting its ad as a toy book and carrying a vast inventory of children’s toys on sale, the warehouse retailer advertised its selection of HDTVs, cameras, laptops, and more. These big-ticket electronics dominated several pages each in the 24-page ad. The sale for BJ’s began Black Friday morning 2012 at 7am and went all weekend.

The overwhelming majority of the ad contained something called “instant rebates.” If you generally try to avoid rebates, don’t run away this time. These are good ones. In the ad it even states that you receive the rebate at the store register, so there’s no delay in your savings on Black Friday. Then, you ask, how are they different from regular discounts? Instead of the retailer putting discounts and deals on the products in the store, the manufacturer gets involved with the reduced prices in the form of these instant rebates.

Let’s start with laptops. The HP Pavilion 14” Sleekbook with 4GB RAM, 320GB HD, and Intel PDC 987 Processor had a $180 instant rebate, making the price reduced to $399.99 at 31% off.  Two other deals included the Toshiba 15.6” L855-S5375 Laptop PC with 6GB RAM, 750GB HD, and Intel Core i7 Processor for $599.99 after a $180 instant rebate (23% off) and the ASUS S405CA Ultrabook (6GB RAM, 750GB HD, Intel Core i5 Processor) for $579.99 after a $120 instant rebate (17% off).

Next we had HDTVs, covering pages 5-7 and ranging from the $149.99 Sansui 29” LED HDTV ($70 off in instant rebates, 31.8% off) to the $1,289.99 VIZIO 65” 1080p 120 Hz Smart LED HDTV ($260 instant rebate, 16.7% off).

Moving onto cameras, we saw a good selection available—the Panasonic 14M 10x Optical Zoom Camera went for 44% off in instant rebates, at $99. For more serious photographers, there were camera bundles which included extra lens, SD cards for more memory, and camera cases. The Nikon J1 10.1 MP Advanced Lens Camera System had 35% off/$300 in instant rebates for a price of $549.99.

Tablets were not a huge selling point for BJ’s, with only the Samsung 7” Galaxy Tab 2 with Bonus Case at $179.99. This was the same price as the one at Best Buy that year.

At the end of the 2012 ad were the online prices available for products from Wednesday (Nov. 21) through Cyber Monday (Nov. 26). Comparing a few of the items online vs. in-store, they looked relatively similar. The Samsung 22” HDTV was the same, $159.99. The Olympus digital camera and case, though, varied in its advertised model: the 26x zoom was in-store and the 24x zoom was online, but both were $129.99 after instant rebates.

BJ’s Black Friday Store Hours

BJ’s has announced that it will not be hopping on the Thanksgiving bandwagon this year – in fact, the wholesaler’s President and CEO, Laura Sen has addressed the trend head on, saying, “I’m proud that BJ’s Clubs are, once again, closed on Thanksgiving, allowing our team members to enjoy the holiday…We always must balance what is best for our team members with our sales goals.” Black Friday will instead be waiting until 7am on Black Friday to begin its sales event.
