Best RadioShack Black Friday Deals from 2012

The best RadioShack Black Friday deals from 2012 started at 6am Friday, earlier than this year interestingly enough. It decided to maintain the early morning start instead of compete with other retail toys and electronics stores for the Thanksgiving night hours. The sale ended Saturday night, with 163 items listed in its ad from which customers could choose. The “best deal” award, with 85% off, went to the $9.99 McAfee Internet Security 2013 (good for up to 3 PCs), with the $12.99 Samsung HM 1200 Bluetooth Headset getting second with 56.7% off and the $9.99 SanDisk 32GB Cruzer USB Flash Drive coming in third with 56.6% off. But most buyers were more interested in the big electronics, so let’s see how they fared.

Televisions, digital cameras, and laptops did not have the greatest deals that weekend. The Apex 32” LED HDTV went for $199.99, off $50 from the original price, but the ad tried to make it seem more with a tag of “$30 back in coupons” and an installation offer that was not advertised as free (so probably wasn’t). For laptops, the HP Envy 14” w/ Intel Core i3 6GM RAM, 500 GB HDD, and Windows 8 was $499, down a mere 16.67%, and the Toshiba laptop on sale had a price cut by $50, down only to $299. Some restrictions applied, such as one item per customer and in-store only offers. The two Amazon tablets that RadioShack sold, the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 7” 16GB Tablet at $199.99 and the Amazon Kindle Wi-Fi 6” E-ink Display at $69.99, turned out to have no price cuts to them. They went for the same price at the online RadioShack store and in-store pre-Black Friday, respectively.

Two last things to mention about last year’s sale catalog are phones and the $10 off coupons. Some smartphone deals such as the $49.99 Samsung Galaxy SIII required new phone contracts with Sprint for the reduced price, but there were low cost, no contract phone alternatives like the Samsung Galaxy Rush at $69.99. The 2012 ad’s prevalent offer of $10 off coupons for every $50 spent at RadioShack on Black Friday were not too clear, but they seemed to be coupons good for $10 off a purchase of $10 or more in a future visit to the store.

The results of RadioShack’s Black Friday proved positive, helping the store start that holiday season strongly. This was attributed, by some analysts, to the early morning start and the doorbuster deals. In general, shoppers ignored any full-priced electronics during the weekend, so the allure came from the discounts. However, RadioShack didn’t do as good in its overall net sales in the fourth quarter of its fiscal year 2012 as it did in 2011, the contrast between $1.29 billion in net sales for 2012 versus 2011’s $1.38 billion for that same quarter.
