The coffee makers: Up close and personal

From the outside, it’s difficult to spot a difference between these appliances. After all, they both have standard features, such as a carafe, water reservoir and brew basket.

But look a little closer and you’ll start to notice some variances. The Bonavita BV1900TS features a durable, stainless steel-lined thermal carafe. The maker comes in stainless steel or black and stainless.

The Technivorm Moccamaster KBG 741, on the other hand, has a clear glass water reservoir that allows users to watch the brewing process.

And the standard polished silver and matte black color schemes are just the beginning for this model. Coffee lovers who like a bit of flash can choose from colors including orange, pink, fresh green, grape and royal blue.

A good-looking machine is nice, but coffee aficionados know functionality is key.

The Bonavita BV1900TS aims to make brewing easy. It features one-touch brew operation, an auto-off function, a flat-bottomed filter basket and a powerful 1500-watt heater.

The device’s stainless steel carafe has an eight-cup capacity. Parts are dishwasher-safe, and all plastic components are BPA-free.

The Technivorm Moccamaster KBG 741 has a 10-cup carafe, an auto-adjusting, dual-phase hot-plate, auto drip-stop brew basket and auto shut-off feature after 100 minutes. According to the manufacturer, the 1475-watt coffee maker holds to a consistent temperature range for better brewing results.

All plastic parts are BPA-free, and various components of the maker can be removed for cleaning.

No purchase decision is complete without considering cost.

The Bonavita BV1900TS has a list price of $189.99, while the Technivorm Moccamaster KBG 741 has a regular retail price of $339.

Regardless of which brand and maker you choose, we recommend shopping at online giant Amazon, where we’ve spotted considerable discounts on both models. Prime members can even score free two-day shipping.

So which coffee maker should earn a place on your countertop?

If you’ll be entertaining large groups regularly, the more expensive Technivorm Moccamaster might be worth the extra cash. You’ll enjoy the visible carafe and you’ll be able to brew a full 10 cups in four to six minutes. Plus, you have a wider range of brewer housing colors.

If you’re not willing to shell out the extra $150, stick to the Bonavita BV1900TS. It has a smaller carafe but is reliable and full of functional features, like one-touch brew and auto-off.
