Half Price Books Black Friday 2014

Half Price Books has leaked its 2014 Black Friday coupons! Check out the coupon below for the bookstore’s Early Bird Special and All Day Deals. Then scroll down for our analysis of the deals:

For the fourth year so far, Half Price Books is offering its customers special deals on Black Friday. The retailer, which sells new and used books, music, movies and more, is featuring a one-day sale that kicks off at 7 a.m. Nov. 28. Although the discounts are minimal, the early-bird rewards are sure to please.

Head to the store early to make sure you’re among the first 100 customers to get a free tote bag and gift certificate. While the standard gift card is worth $5, one lucky customer of the 100 will receive a $100 gift certificate instead.

Besides these rewards, Half Price Books is offering its customers a coupon that can be redeemed one of two ways:

  • $5 off a purchase of $25 or more
  • $15 off a purchase of $50 or more

The coupon cannot be combined with any other discounts, but is applicable to everything in the store except gift cards. This offer is almost identical to last year’s promotion, with one major difference: 2013’s coupon gave customers the choice of a 40% discount on any single item in place of the $5 off $25 option. Unfortunately, this leaves customers with a smaller discount: 20% at most, rather than 40%. It’s still better than 2012’s 15% discount, but it’s unlikely to impress serious bargain hunters.

Looking to save a bit more on your Half Price Books shopping this season? Before you head to your local store, consider signing up for the store’s newsletter. You’ll get coupons by email, including immediate 30% and 40% discounts as a “thank you” for the store for signing up.

Best Half Price Books Black Friday Deals From 2013

One of the largest chains of new and used bookstores in the country, Half Price Books has more than 100 locations in 16 states. In addition to new and used books, the retailer sells magazines, CDs, cassettes, LPs, videos, DVDs and video games. Since its founding in 1972, the store’s motto has been to buy and sell “anything printed or recorded, except yesterday’s newspaper.”

Unlike other retailers, Half Price Books didn’t release a Black Friday ad spanning dozens of pages and highlighting hundreds of doorbusters. Instead, publicized a brief but worthwhile offer online. The site announced the same early-bird special as the year before and released its printable coupons to be used storewide on any inventory.

As in 2012, doors opened at 7 a.m., and the first 100 shoppers at each store received a free tote bag containing a $5 gift card. Of the 100 bags, one contained a gift card worth $100 instead of $5.

The bookstore also offered a printable coupon for either 40% off a single item or $15 off a purchase of at least $50. While the offer of the $15 discount remained the same as the year before, the 40% off a single item replaced the previous year’s 15% of a total purchase. The coupons are limited to one per person, and both discounts cannot be combined. While the change was a disappointment for shoppers who planned to snap up stacks of books, it meant greater savings for consumers looking to buy only a single item, particularly for expensive titles.

2013 marked the third year the store had participated in the Black Friday tradition by offering its customers special deals on the shopping holiday. The offer was limited to Black Friday itself and did not include Half Price Outlet locations. All stores in the chain were closed Thanksgiving Day.
