REI Black Friday 2015

The 2015 REI Black Friday announcement is here, but it might not be what you’d expect.

This year, outdoor giant REI won’t be celebrating Black Friday at all. Instead, the retailer is encouraging its customers to leave stores and shopping bags behind in favor of outdoor adventures.

On Black Friday, Nov. 27, all 143 REI store locations will be closed and employees will be paid to go outside, according to the co-op’s website.

The store explained the move in a letter from REI President and CEO Jerry Stritzke.

“We’re a different kind of company — and while the rest of the world is fighting it out in the aisles, we’ll be spending our day a little differently. We’re choosing to opt outside, and want you to come with us,” the letter said.

Shoppers who also choose to forgo Black Friday shopping are encouraged to share photos of their post-Thanksgiving excursions with the #OptOutside hashtag.

Only time will tell if REI releases any discounts or deals for the holiday season.

If you like shopping at REI, you’ll definitely want to check out the Black Friday deals at these similar stores: Dick’s Sporting Goods and Gander Mountain.

Outdoor retailer REI offered discounts of up to 50% off during the store’s 2014 Black Friday promotion.

The Black Friday frenzy kicked off early on Thanksgiving Day through the retailer’s website — where there was free shipping with no minimum purchase — but store locations didn’t open until 8 a.m. on Black Friday.

REI’s deals ran the gamut from apparel to activity trackers. Here’s a look at some of the best sale items in the store’s 2014 Black Friday ad:

  • Garmin Forerunner 910XT GPS heart rate monitor for $269.99 (regularly $450)
  • REI Flash 22 Pack for $28.99 (regularly $49.50)
  • 50% off all REI-brand down booties
  • 30% off all Big Agnes sleeping pads
  • 25% off all Fitbit activity items
  • Extra 30% off one REI Outlet item (no coupon required)
