Outdoor retailer REI hosts some of the best deals for nature explorers on many occasions, but Black Friday isn’t one of them. For 2016, REI will not host any Black Friday sales and instead repeats the #OptOutside campaign that was launched in 2015.

In addition to closing all 149 stores, the campaign’s initiative gives employees a paid day off to enjoy nature, while encouraging customers to do the same. Those who do go outside can use a special photo filter available on REI’s website and include the hashtag #OptOutside to share their adventures on social media.
During the 2015 #OptOutside campaign, REI stores were back in business on the Saturday after Black Friday, but didn’t promote any deals or sales.
In previous years, the closest to a Black Friday deal you would find at REI was at the pre-holiday sale, where shoppers could find 30-50% off select clothing and gear in the week leading up to Black Friday.
REI might sit out on Black Friday, but the store hosts tons of other sales throughout the year.
Are you thinking about an outdoor vacation? Now is the time to put your holiday spending towards meeting credit card sign-up bonuses and earning points you can use on hotel, dining and airfare since November historically has the best promotions for travel and airline cards. You can buy gifts for loved ones and maximize rewards for travel plans all with the same Black Friday shopping haul.
