The TVs up close and personal

Samsung JU6500 4K ultra HD smart TV

NerdWallet takes you shopping: The Samsung JU6500 series retails for $1,099.99 to $4,999.99, depending on the screen size. Screen sizes range from 40 inches all the way up to 75 inches.

It wouldn’t be called a “smart” TV if it didn’t connect to the internet. Samsung’s platform is called Smart Hub; through it you can download apps (such as Netflix and Hulu), play games and more. And there’s a multimedia panel that lets you quickly access and play movies, music and more from all of your devices.

The TV has four HDMI inputs, offering a good number of options when it comes to hooking up peripheral equipment. Some users notice a periodic judder when watching Blu-rays, DVDs and streaming movies. Others said if you sit on the ends of the couch, viewers experience a glare on the screen.

Good fit for: People looking for a smart TV with an easy-to-use interface and without a big price tag. Smart Hub makes it simple to view a ton of content, from the internet as well as from your personal collection.

Vizio SmartCast M-Series

NerdWallet takes you shopping: The Vizio SmartCast M-Series ranges in price from $799.99 for the 50-incher all the way up to $3,999.99 for the huge 80-inch set.

Instead of implementing an app ecosystem directly in the TV, Vizio packages the M-Series with the SmartCast Android tablet. Users can search for shows across streaming apps on the tablet to watch on the TV.

The TV offers at least four HDMI inputs, plus two USB ports, which is great for people who have extra equipment.

The SmartCast has great motion refresh, perfect for watching sports and playing video games. Even though it doesn’t get too bright, the updated M-Series supports Dolby Vision HDR picture quality so that compatible movies and shows appear with more depth for an enhanced, realistic image.

Good fit for: People who want a great TV at a great price and who have a lot of peripherals. The SmartCast tablet is an adequate replacement for an in-device internet hub, and it offers basic apps that should make anyone feel hooked up. And for people who enjoy state-of-the-art high-definition visuals, the Vizio is a good option.
