With days left before Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest become one program, elite travelers who plan on spending 50 nights at Marriott hotels in 2019 now have a better idea of the benefits they’ll receive.

The hotel chain recently unveiled two benefit options at the top of the award chart: welcome gifts at all hotels and Platinum Elite Choice Benefits.

While the welcome gift is a regular perk, the Platinum Elite Choice Benefits are new for travelers with the highest loyalty status. Although the five suite night awards could add strong value to Platinum Elite status, the other benefits may not be as valuable. For example, instead of selecting five elite night credits as a Choice Benefit, loyal Marriott travelers may get more benefit by holding the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card, which will grant cardholders 15 elite night credits starting in 2019.

On the downside, welcome amenities have been downgraded for both Marriott Rewards and Starwood Preferred Guest elite members. When checking in, Platinum Elite guests must choose between points or free breakfast — and at some properties, free breakfast isn’t an option.

Marriott Platinum Elite Choice Benefit options

Similar to the SPG 50-night Platinum Choice Benefit, the Marriott Platinum Elite Choice Benefits will offer more value for the most loyal guests. Choice Benefits are granted after guests stay 50 and 75 nights in a year, corresponding with the new Platinum Elite and Platinum Premier Elite tiers.

After reaching Platinum Elite status by staying 50 nights during a calendar year, members are offered one of the following gifts:

  • Five elite night credits
  • Five suite night awards
  • Gift Silver Elite status to give to another member
  • $100 gift to UNICEF
  • 40% off their favorite hotel bed

When that traveler reaches Platinum Premier Elite for staying 75 nights in a calendar year, they will be offered their choice of one additional gift:

  • Five elite night credits
  • Five suite night awards
  • Gift Gold Elite status to give to another member
  • $100 gift to UNICEF
  • 40% off their favorite hotel bed
  • One free night award

Platinum welcome gifts across all Marriott brands

In addition to the Platinum Choice Benefits, Marriott also published a list of Platinum Elite welcome gift options. Across all brands, top-level elite members can select one benefit, which includes extra points per stay, daily breakfast for a member and guest, or select regional amenities. Amenities can include local gifts, or food and beverage credits.

Unfortunately, the welcome amenities are not evenly distributed between all hotel brands. Of the 36 brands, only 25 will offer 1,000 bonus points as a welcome amenity after the merger is complete. Additionally, the number of hotels offering free breakfast as a welcome amenity is even smaller after Aug. 18:

  • St. Regis
  • JW Marriott Resorts
  • The Luxury Collection
  • W Hotels
  • Marriott Resorts
  • Sheraton Hotels and Resorts
  • Delta Resorts
  • Le Méridien Hotels and Resorts
  • Westin Hotels and Resorts
  • Tribute Portfolio Hotels
  • Four Points by Sheraton Hotels
  • Protea Hotels
  • Aloft Hotels

If free breakfast is an important benefit, other hotel loyalty programs may provide stronger value. Hilton Honors offers complimentary breakfast at all hotels to Gold members. Hilton Honors Gold status is available by holding the Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card.
