The Chase Freedom® Visa - $150 Bonus Cash Back is Chase's answer to the popular "5% cash back" cards, which offer bonus rewards of 5% on special categories that rotate quarterly. The other two contenders are the Discover it® Cash Back and the Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® MasterCard - Limited Time Offer $150 Cash Back.
All three of these cards tend to have very similar rewards structures, and offer mostly the same bonus categories each quarter. And all three require cardholders to sign up each quarter to earn the additional rewards.
But where the Chase Freedom® Visa - $150 Bonus Cash Back stands out is that it pays an unlimited 1% base rate on all purchases, and it has the highest cap on bonus rewards - up to $1,500 in spending each quarter. Meanwhile, the Discover® More® Card only pays a full 1% after you've spent $3,000, and the Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® MasterCard - Limited Time Offer $150 Cash Back caps annual rewards at a total of $300.
Here is the bonus category calendar for 2011:
Jan – Mar: Grocery and drug stores.
Apr – Jun: Home improvement, lawn & garden, and home furnishings.
Jul – Sep: Gas, hotels, and airlines.
Oct – Dec: Dining, department stores, movies, and charity.
We've often griped about the convoluted 5% rewards structure, and especially about the fact that users have to proactively "opt in" to receive them. However, Chase allows users to sign up retroactively, and still earn the rewards. Plus, this new $150 signup bonus makes the offer a lot more appealing.
