Detailed review: NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card

The NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card, issued by Comenity Bank, kicks off with certain benefits that die-hard National Football League fans might find valuable, including discounts on merchandise, a 0% introductory annual percentage rate offer on game tickets and a sign-up bonus that could cover the cost of some tailgating.

But when it comes to rewards, you're looking for touchdowns, not field goals. Regrettably, even for ultimate fans, the potential to score big with the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card is limited, especially given its limited reward values for cash back.

If you need breathing room to pay for NFL tickets, plenty of cards offer longer 0% intro APR periods. And if you want rich rewards, there's no shortage of cards that offer high rates on all spending, not just in narrow categories.

NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card: Basics

Card type: Rewards.

Annual fee: $0.

Sign-up bonus: Earn $100 Cash Back when you spend $500 on purchases outside of the NFL in your first 90 days from open date. The bonus can only be redeemed in the form of a statement credit.

Rewards:

  • 3% in rewards on qualifying NFL purchases and NFL team purchases, which includes purchases from NFLShop.com; NFL stadium purchases; and NFL tickets from NFL team offices, Ticketmaster, StubHub and SeatGeek.

  • 2% in rewards on all grocery store, food delivery, restaurant, gym and sporting goods purchases.

  • 1% in rewards on everything else.

Cardholders are immediately enrolled in the NFL Extra Points Program. Rewards are earned in the form of points and can be redeemed for:

  • NFLShop.com gift cards.

  • NFL merchandise from the Rewards Catalog.

  • NFL experience passes (2 max per event).

  • NFL game tickets (2 max per event).

  • Statement credits. 200 points = $1, meaning points redeemed this way are worth a half-cent each.

APR: The ongoing APR is 17.49%-27.49% Variable. When you use this card to purchase game tickets from any participating NFL team ticket retailer, you may be eligible for a 0% promotional APR for six months. After the promotional APR expires, the standard variable rate applies.

Balance transfer fee: Either $10 or 5% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.

Foreign transaction fee: 3%.

Benefits and perks

Free tickets and ticket financing

Perhaps the biggest draw of the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card is that it can help you score NFL game tickets by redeeming your rewards points. However, in most cases, you can only get two tickets per game. You can't choose the ticket section and seats, either.

In the instances where you can’t get free tickets, the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card makes it easy to pay for them over time. NFL ticket purchases of $250 or more from a participating ticket retailer may be automatically placed on a promotional credit plan in which interest is waived for six months. When just one regular season ticket can cost $300, this perk may be one that you'll use rather frequently.

Discount on NFL merchandise

Owning the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card is your ticket to a promo code for NFLShop.com. You'll get 20% off NFLShop.com purchases with the code EXTRAPOINTS as long as you pay for the order with the card. The promo code cannot be combined with any other offers.

Exclusive experiences

You might be able to get access to NFL games and events such as the Super Bowl, the NFL draft and VIP tailgates by cashing in rewards points.

Customizable cards

The NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card can be personalized to feature the logo of your favorite NFL team.

Drawbacks and considerations

Not ideal for everyday spending

You may be a big NFL fan, but if you don't actually do a lot of NFL-specific spending, the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card isn't a good fit for you. Some of the best cash-back cards offer as much as 2% back on every dollar spent, not just in specific categories. One to consider is the Citi Double Cash® Card, which earns a total of 2% cash back on all purchases — 1% when you make a purchase, and another 1% when you pay the bill. The Citi Double Cash® Card also charges an annual fee of $0.

And while earning 3% on NFL ticket purchases is pretty good, you’ll get the same rate with the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. It earns an unlimited 3% cash back on dining, streaming services, grocery store purchases and entertainment, and its definition of "entertainment" includes sporting events.

The annual fee for the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card is $0, and it offers a sign-up bonus.

Poor redemption value for cash back

It’ll cost you 200 points to earn just $1 in statement credit with the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card, which means that points are worth only a half-penny. (The industry standard is a full cent per point.) Point values might be better when redeemed for gift cards or experiences, but the exact point-to-cent ratio varies based on the NFL team and the type of experience.

Also, rewards points earned with the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card expire after five years.

In contrast, general rewards credit cards like the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card earn straight-up cash back, so there's no point valuation to figure out, nor is there any expiration date.

Foreign transaction fee

NFL teams occasionally travel overseas to play, but taking this card with you on a trip abroad will cost you an extra 3% per transaction. A travel credit card is a great alternative. The $0-annual-fee Bank of America® Travel Rewards credit card, for example, charges no foreign transaction fees. It also earns 1.5 points per $1 spent, and there's a decent sign-up bonus.

Alternate Pick: High rewards rate on all purchases
1% back when you buy, 1% back when you pay

This card earns a total of 2% cash back on all purchases — 1% when you make a purchase, and another 1% when you pay the bill. The annual fee is $0.

How to decide if it's right for you

If you're the kind of superfan who lives for football season, the NFL Extra Points Visa® Credit Card can be a rewarding way to show your team pride — you can even get your team's logo on the card.

But overall, the card should be on the bench for most, as other options on the market offer better rewards programs and longer 0% intro APR periods. So call an audible and scroll through the NerdWallet best credit cards roundup for more options.

Methodology

NerdWallet reviews credit cards with an eye toward both the quantitative and qualitative features of a card. Quantitative features are those that boil down to dollars and cents, such as fees, interest rates, rewards (including earning rates and redemption values) and the cash value of benefits and perks. Qualitative factors are those that affect how easy or difficult it is for a typical cardholder to get good value from the card. They include such things as the ease of application, simplicity of the rewards structure, the likelihood of using certain features, and whether a card is well-suited to everyday use or is best reserved for specific purchases. Our star ratings serve as a general gauge of how each card compares with others in its class, but star ratings are intended to be just one consideration when a consumer is choosing a credit card.
