Nothing but good experiences

I’m not sure what these other people writing reviews are talking about, but I’ve had nothing but great experiences with Alliant.
Their rates are lightyears beyond my old accounts, as is their website and mobile app.
Setting up the accounts was super easy and took no time to start using the debit card and checks and have all of my of my money in Alliant accounts. I LOVE their $20/month ATM reimbursements.
I even accidentally locked myself out of my account a couple of times and customer service has been super friendly and helpful!
I’ve already been recommending them to a bunch of friends and family, and plan to continue to do so.

Frequent problems, poor systems

Rates are attractive, so I created savings and a cash back credit card. But it’s been a painful experience every month for 6 months now. Things they DON’T tell you. 1. To get your cash back from Visa card, you MUST call or go online) every month or it sits there drawing zero interest (your money is a cash cow for them, so they make it hard for you to get it). 2. Limited options to redeem, and no confirmation number for either choice when you’re done – a) move it to your Alliant checking or your Alliant savings (fastest), or b) apply as a statement credit on your cash rewards credit card. If option b, you won’t see it post on the credit card side until the next statement closing. The rewards balance shows it was redeemed, so you think it’s lost between systems somewhere). 3. Frequent system failures in the cash rewards system, so you have to call/go online several times to milk your money out of their cow and make it work for you. (The Cash Rewards people don’t work for Alliant, and they can’t do the transfer either if the system is down.) I learned the hard way and I’m closing my account as quickly as I can get all my money back in my hands finally. I refuse to let amateurs handle my money.

Not Customer Friendly

My experience with Alliant was like a day at the DMV. The customer service is crappy (and made me very crabby) and their requirements are inflexible and strict (so I will no longer have an account with them). Here’s what happened… after signing up and AFTER receiving a debit card and a pin number for the debit card in the mail, Alliant sends another letter saying I need to verify my address. WTF? Shouldn’t you verify my address before mailing a debit card and pin number to me? They requested several documents including a utility bill mailed to my address. Utility bills are in my boyfriend’s name. I called to see if there was an acceptable substitute. The first woman I talked to put me on hold for a long time to check. Then came back and said insurance cards in my name, with my address on them were not acceptable. It HAD to be a utility bill. Most people do not live alone, and often people share utility bills. That leaves a lot of people unable to provide utility bills in their name. This is also difficult for anyone who has very recently moved. UGh. Although she put me on hold and kept saying “no”, the first woman was fairly nice. I asked if I could speak to her superviser (maybe her superviser had authority to say “yes” to some alternatives). Her superviser did! OK, the insurance card is OK. But man, her superviser was rude. I was already a little crabby when I called because of the way they worded their letter to me (more on that in a bit), but I wanted a punching bag by the time I got off the phone. She would not let me talk. She kept talking over the top of me. The other problem besides proof of address is I needed to send a copy of my social security card. I don’t have one. It was stolen a while back. Yeah. Sucks. I said I can get another one, but it will likely take more than 10 days, which is the amount of time they must receive it in. I don’t know what banks are able to do, but it would have been good customer service if she could have given me a little leeway. Nah. She was like DMV lady. She gave zero. So the letter they sent telling me I needed to verify my address and identity made it sound like they were accusing me of lying in my application and said that if I didn’t send them the documents they requested within 10 days (that isn’t much time, btw), they will close my accounts. So accusatory and threatening! But I filled out my application truthfully. I didn’t do anything wrong. Needless to say I’m going with a different credit union. Trying to bank with Alliant has not been fun and a waste of time.

Don’t go near this Credit Union

They will never approve you. For a simple 10k credit card they will deny you. Stay away from them. They pull up your report and keep playing games to send them docs but they will deny it

I love them!

I’ve been banking with them for over 10 years. They have the best rates for car loans, they make the loan approval process simple and easy, their customer service reps are always polite and helpful.

Poor Customer Service & Exorbitant Fees

Needed statements for 2015 for an audit and discovered that there is extremely limited history online and only goes back to 2016. The customer service rep (who claimed she is a supervisor) was terrible in comparison to the other financial institutions I spoke with today. To top it all off, in order to get a copy of the statements emailed to me, I had to pay $5 per statement. The others I spoke with today emailed everything I needed for free. So disappointing.

HSA Betrayal

I jumped through hoops to join the Credit Union in order to get access to their HSA account. Less than a year later they sold out my account. I only had a short time to withdraw from being converted to a garbage account they had betrayed me to.

Who writes these reviews, anyway??

I’ve just read a bunch of negative reviews about Alliant and am surprised. Here’s my experience: I heard about their 3% cash back (incredible, huh?) credit card and before applying I wanted to talk to someone about it. Got a supervisor /loan officer on the line in 2 minutes. He answered my questions, sent me a followup email. Took my application over the phone and I had an approval in literally 3 minutes. They needed me to upload a couple of documents and I had my membership and cards in 4 days.

What more could anyone ask for>

Hard Inquiries on Credit Report for opening Checking/Savings Accounts

Alliant became the credit union of the company I work for. I opened a checking and savings account. Eight months later, my wife (who works for same employer) wanted to become a co-contributor to my existing checking and savings accounts. After registering for account access, Alliant pulled (2) hard inquiry credit checks on her credit bureau accounts. Her credit is listed as excellent. When we contacted them for an explanation, they said that this was “normal procedure” for anyone added to accounts. This is ridiculous - pulling credit TWICE within one month, just to put money in their bank. It’s written in obscure small print, so BE AWARE!

Car loan - workable, but pain

I got a car loan through AutoNation. Rate was ok, but issue raised before first payment. When i contacted to make additional principal only - not available. Seriously? I can’t make extra payment w/o interest tagged on it? The way to make any additional payment, had to link my external checking, transfer to Alliant saving account, transfer out of Saving into the loan account. Oh yeah FDIC 6 transaction limit on saving account, when you make an extra payment, the interest since the last payment being counted, even if you have regular direct withdrawal setup. What a bloody mess. Holly crap need to pay this off before any other loans simply because how much pain it is just to freaking pay to these folks. If you have an option to go elsewhere -save yourself aggravation!

WORST CREDIT UNION EVER

this is the worst bank/credit union i have ever dealt with by far. if you need any customer service they are worthless. They sent me to a collections agency after i had an account open for two weeks because they suspected fraud. Even though the purchases were legit. DO NOT JOIN THIS CREDIT UNION, you will regret it. They are a complete joke.

A solid, well-established option

Alliant has been my home credit union for 20 years (when it was the United Airlines Employees Credit Union), and it has consistently offered high rates and great customer service for my family. We’ve had savings, checking, and auto loans through Alliant. It’s been great!

#34

Stay away! I read all the good reviews so I tried to use this bank.

What they advertise is simply not true! Worst bank account to have. Avoid like the plague and stick to your locally owned credit unions.

GREAT EXPERIENCE

THE BAD REVIEWS ARE RIDICULOUS. YOUR BANKING EXPERIENCE IS WHAT YOU MAKE OF IT. OF COURSE THEY WILL NEED TO VERIFY YOUR ID. READ UP ON THE PATRIOT ACT. OF COURSE THEY CHARGE NSF FEES. YOU ARE THE ONE WHO OVERSPENT AND IT IS NOT THEIR JOB TO FREELY LEND YOU MONEY BECAUSE YOU CAN’T TRACK YOUR OWN ACCOUNT BALANCE. AND $25 PER IS LESS THAN THE AVERAGE OF $32-$35 NSF FEE AT OTHER BANKS. OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO QUALIFY FOR A CHECKING ACCOUNT. IF YOU HAVE A CLOSURE WITH FUNDS OWED TO ANOTHER BANK, WHY WOULD THEY RISK THIS HAPPENING WITH THEM? OF COURSE YOU HAVE TO QUALIFY FOR A CREDIT CARD. THOSE FUNDS ARE UNSECURED. HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU WOULD GIVE 10K TO UNSECURED AND TRUST THEM TO PAY IT BACK? DAILY XFER LIMITS PROTECT YOU AND THE INSTITUTION. EVERYONE COMPLAINING ABOUT XFER LIMITS, ID VERIFICATION ETC ARE THE FIRST PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE YELLING FRAUD IF ALLIANT ALLOWED BANKING AS THESE MEMBERS WOULD HAVE IT. YOU WOULD THINK WITH ALL OF THE FRAUD OUT THERE THESE PEOPLE WOULD FIGURE IT OUT. NOPE. I HAVE HAD NOTHING BUT A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE. OPENED SEVERAL JOINT ACCOUNTS WITH MY KIDS. I WAS ELIGIBLE TO JOIN WITH A DONATION TO AN ORGANIZATION, WHICH MAE ME A MEMBER OF SAID ORGANIZATION, AND THEREFORE ELIGIBLE TO BANK WITH ALLIANT. BUT ALLIANT MADE MY OPENING DEPOSITS FOR ME. SO I DONATED $10 AND ALLIANT GAVE ME $15 (OPENED 3 ACCOUNTS). I SET UP THE XFERS TO HAPPEN OVER A FEW DAYS DUE TO DAILY LIMITS, NO BIGGIE. I SET UP RECURRING XFERS TO MY ALLIANT ACCOUNTS. NO BIGGIE. I USE THE APP AND CAN SEE ALL ACCOUNTS I AM JOINT ON, NOT JUST MY OWN, WHICH IS AWESOME. AND MY SAVINGS INTEREST RATE HAS GONE UP TWICE SINCE OPENING. THAT HAS NOT HAPPENED AT ANY OTHER BANK I HAVE EVER BANKED WITH. AND WHEN I HAVE CALLED CUSTOMER SERVICE, THEY HAVE ALWAYS BEEN PLEASANT AND COURTEOUS. DON’T EXPECT TO GET SUGAR IF YOU ARE HANDING OUT MANURE.

Loooove Alliant!

I’ve been banking with Alliant since February and I love it. I was getting screwed by Wells Fargo and our local credit union was “meh”. I’ve made a good chunk off of interest from my accounts. The platform is easy to use and the customer service is great in my experience. I researched a lot of online banks and decided to go with Alliant in the end. Really glad I switched. One of my favorite features is being able to open up to 19 supplemental savings accounts. Makes it easy to separate expenses, such as rent, utilities, student loans, groceries, vacation etc. Would highly recommend that everyone give Alliant a try.

Really Bad Customer Service

I have only been associated with Alliant for around 2 years.I got a little behind on payments due to poor tenants.SOLD the property, …paid them 15 k . They cashed the check a week ago. (Tried to pay over the phone,…but they wouldn’t allow it!)Called today to pay off the rest of the loan and come to find out…they had NOT credited my account, …hadn’t a clue as to what was going on, …and didn’t have any supervisor and/ or management people to speak to about it!!!It turns out they credited someone else’s account, …and take up to 48 hours for them to identify their ass from 3rd base.If this is the type of people that you want to do business with, …you are a fool! Oh yeah, it took close to 20 minutes to get someone on the line.

#38

stay away

Their visa 3% cash back card is a classic bait-and-switch

The action (generally illegal) of advertising goods that are an apparent bargain, with the intention of substituting inferior or more expensive goods.

Only credit card I’ve ever been denied but they signed me up for an inferior card without my permission.

#39

Excellent Credit Union

I love this/my credit union. They offer advanced mobile banking (website, mobile capture, & apps) while providing some of the highest rates on deposits (including checking - which can be hard to find), lowest rates on loans, and some cool extras like quarterly credit rating updates.
Plus they offer one of the best cash back credit cards!
Someone said they don’t participate in shared branching, but they do offer a HUGE number of free ATM locations and refund ATM charges you do occur (up to 3 per month I think).
The only negatives are it can be hard to get a large amount of cash or a certified check unless you live near one of their branches (they will FedEx a check or you can request a wire for a fee of course).

High Interest, Low Fuss

After bouncing between Wells Fargo and Chase for many years, I did some research and switched to Alliant just over a year ago. I still use my credit cards (Chase, Citi) for purchases, but I’ve had no trouble transitioning to Alliant.

The interest rates are marvelous, and I randomly get emails saying my savings interest has gone up (incrementally).

The app is solid but can be sluggish, and the website is bare-bones but functional; I’d say these both could use some updates, but they get the job done.

Overall, I’m a delighted customer who recommends Alliant to my friends and family.
