I agree with Pat Palmer’s answer. If you do not have health insurance, ask for financial or charity assistance. After you have had an itemized bill reviewed for any errors and/or overcharges, it could reduce it down quite a bit from the amount billed.

If the dates of service are less than 6 months old, and your son had no insurance, he might be eligible for Medicaid (MediCal in CA) retroactively. He should apply right away as timeliness is an issue.

Sorry to hear that your son is in such a situation.
I would highly suggest speaking with the hospital about financial assistance.

If all else fails I would suggest reaching out to a medical bill advocate who can audit the medical records for errors in coding, compliance and pricing and negotiate on your son’s behalf.
