I need to first put a lock or monitoring on my social security number for daughter& I. Then I need a smooth approach to building up my score

Hi Bobbychatman76.bc and welcome to the NerdWallet community. I would suggest a credit freeze for both you and your daughter. Here are some posts that explain how to set them up (you have to do it with each credit bureau, but freezing children’s credit is a very good idea).

How to get a free credit freeze

Why you should freeze your child’s credit

As for building credit, you’ll need to unfreeze your credit (or unfreeze with the bureau the creditor uses, if you know it) when you apply. Also, be sure, or as close as you can be, you qualify before you apply, because each application can result in a small, temporary dip in your score. (If approved, it will quickly be offset by, hopefully, positive payment information).

Here’s a NerdWallet post about building credit.

Good luck to you, and we hope you’ll let us know how it’s going.

Really glad you’re paying attention to your credit and that of your daughter, @Bobbychatman76.bc. The freezes @Bev mentioned are an excellent idea. Can you tell us a little more about why you’re concerned? If you suspect someone of trying to steal your identity or hers, there might be more steps to take.

I have now reported the fraudulent activity…Should I now file my income tax return

If you’re concerned someone will use your identity to file a fraudulent return, then yes, absolutely, get those taxes done. We tell people to file as early in the tax season as they can, just for that reason. Please let us know if you run into any issues.
