My best advice would definitely apply for financial assistance.
According to the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) for family of three you are probably at 250%-300% of the FPL level.
Each hospital has different policies and guidelines for financial assistance and you can normally find out what their policy and guidelines are as well as obtain the application online at their website.
Most hospitals provide 100% write off if you are at or below the 250% Federal Poverty Level. Some hospitals will go as high as 800% such as here in New York.
Even if you are above the 250% FPL hospitals will still provide a precentage write off of 80%, 50% etc. depending on you gross income and other hospitals will not approve if you are above 250%.
The hospital should approve or deny your application within 30 days and If they deny you financial assistance you have the opportunity to appeal.
You can then negotiate a settlement or arrange small monthly payments or seek out a medical bill advocate to to review your bill for coding, compliance and pricing errors.
Best of luck to you!
