Who is N26?
N26 is one of the newer challenger banks to arrive on the scene in the past few years. It originates in Germany and has expanded throughout Europe and into the US and beyond, since 2015. It achieved its European banking license in 2016. The bank currently specialises in current accounts rather than offering a full range of banking services.
What kinds of current account does N26 offer?
There are three main types of current account offered by N26:
- N26 Current Account: Anyone holding this current account will do their banking through the mobile app, which they can download onto their device. It offers most standard banking services as well as extras such as immediate ability to lock a lost or stolen card through the app and a tool that helps account holders set limits on their daily withdrawals or spending to help them budget. The app allows account holders to transfer and receive money instantly and spending is also automatically categorised. Although the account is free, there may be charges for withdrawals abroad or for going overdrawn without an arranged overdraft, for example.
- N26 Black Account: This account charges a monthly fee but services and transactions that you may use when travelling are free. The account is aimed at those who travel frequently and includes travel insurance.
- N26 Metal Account: This is promoted as a premium account that comes with a metal Mastercard. For a monthly fee there are extra benefits included, such as offers and discounts at retail partners and discounted access to airport lounges. Other fees and eligibility criteria may apply to this account so it’s worth checking the details before applying.
Can anyone qualify for a N26 account?
A credit check is carried out at the point of application so you do need to meet minimum credit score criteria.
How do I pay cash into my account if there are no branches?
If you are approved for a N26 account you can top up the account through transfer from another account, but you are unable to make cash deposits, which is perhaps the main way that this account differs from a standard bank account.
Are all N26’s services available in the UK?
No, not all of them. As a European bank, there are some services that N26 offers that are not yet available to UK users. It may be the case that these services become available in the future but it makes sense to check the services provided carefully before applying for a N26 account.
Can I access an overdraft with my N26 current account?
Not yet. N26 says that it will be offering an overdraft facility in the UK soon, but as yet there is no overdraft facility available.
What do I need to open a N26 account?
As well as passing credit checks, you will need to prove your identity with ID such as a passport or a driving license, prove that you are resident in the UK and that you are over 18.
