Aviva life insurance FAQs

Who is Aviva?

Aviva is the largest life insurance provider in the UK, with more than 11 million policyholders and a history that goes back over 325 years.

The wider Aviva group offers a range of insurance, retirement and investment solutions across its main operating markets in the UK, Ireland and Canada, including car and home insurance, pensions and annuities, and ISAs.

Aviva also offers life insurance and critical illness policies under the Quotemehappy trading name.

How does Aviva life insurance work?

Aviva life insurance aims to protect your loved ones financially by paying out a tax-free lump sum if you die during the policy term. Life insurance from Aviva also usually includes terminal illness cover, allowing you to make a claim on the diagnosis of a condition where you’re expected to live for less than a certain period of time – usually around 12 months.

If a payout is made in relation to terminal illness, the policy ends and there will be no payout when you die. Life insurance cover from Aviva also has no cash value other than from a successful claim.

The quote process is broken down into simple bitesize stages and there is guidance along the way to help you get the cover that you need.

How do I make an Aviva life insurance claim?

If you need to make a claim on an Aviva life insurance policy, you can complete an online form on the Aviva website, which should initiate a member of the claims team to contact you to confirm next steps.

Alternatively, you can call from the UK, or from abroad.

What does Aviva life insurance cover?

Aviva life insurance provides a lump sum payout if you die or are diagnosed with a terminal illness that means you’re likely to have less than a year to live. A claim will only be paid if this happens within the policy term and you’re up to date with your life insurance premiums.

Note that you usually won’t be covered, and a claim can be rejected, should you take your own life or die as a result of a deliberate, self-inflicted injury within the first year of your policy. Life cover can also be invalidated, and a claim refused, if you fail to answer the questions you’re asked by Aviva when applying accurately and honestly. What is covered by your policy as well as any exclusions will be outlined in policy documents. These can be subject to change over time and may be specific to the individual policy.

Can I cancel my Aviva life insurance policy?

Aviva life insurance cover can be cancelled at any time. If you cancel within 30 days of your confirmed policy start date or receiving your policy schedule (if this is later), Aviva state they will refund the premiums you’ve paid. If your 30-day cooling-off period has expired, you can still cancel but you probably won’t receive any money back.

What do I need for my Aviva life insurance application?

When applying for Aviva life insurance, you’ll need to answer a number of further questions, including your age, weight and height. Aviva will also want to know about your general health, any medical conditions you might have now or had in the past, and your family medical history. Also be prepared for questions about your lifestyle, including whether you smoke and drink alcohol (and how much), your job, and any recent travel abroad.

This will allow Aviva to get your application for life insurance under way. Answer everything truthfully and accurately, otherwise your policy could be invalid and might not pay out. Aviva will be in touch if any extra information is required or if it would like you to undergo a medical to advance your application.
