Verdict – The Capital One Spark Select Business is a great card for small businesses: it’s a rewards card, and there’s no cost to carrying it, with no annual fee.
You’ll earn 1 mile per dollar on all eligible purchases, and those points will come back to you as Capital One’s No Hassle Miles.
Despite their name, they’re less miles and more statement credit on travel. I know – that seems like an odd distinction to make, but it’s an apt one: regular miles will go up and down in value while No Hassle Miles remain static.
Regular miles tend to be most valuable in the off-season, when nobody’s booking flights. The converse is also true: when everybody’s trying to fly around the country for the holidays, miles don't get you far.
Meanwhile, No Hassle Miles are essentially a cash equivalent. 1 mile is and will always be redeemable for 1 cent on your travel, hence CapOne’s statement that “if your ticket costs $150, you need 15,000 miles.”
When you do accumulate those miles, you don’t redeem when you book, as you might with those regular miles; rather, you have Capital One apply No Hassle Miles as statement credit to your ticket purchases.
Their rewards aren’t quite immediate this way, but it’s still a great program, if only because these miles are worth exactly as much as they say they are.
They’re also a little more versatile than most. Whereas some cards will restrict your redemption to travel, CapOne gives you the option to request that your miles be put on a gift card to stores like Amazon, Target and more.
Alternative cards for higher rewards
If you’re looking for some richer rewards, CapOne’s got your back. They have a few other Spark Miles business cards.
First, there’s the Capital One Spark Miles Select, which earns an effective 1.5% and has no annual fee. You’re probably wondering: why bother with the Select Business if the Miles Select earns .5% more and neither has an annual fee? The Select Business is intended for companies with limited credit, so might be better for business owners who don't have a long history of financial statements.
If you’re of greater means still, consider the Capital One Spark Miles for Business, which earns 2%. It has an annual fee, but, after enough spending, your rewards will outweigh the charge. With just $5,900 in annual spending, it’s a better deal than the low-end card, the Select Business, and after $11,800, it outstrips the middle child, the Miles Select, too.
