Spring and summer travel won’t require a massive trove of American Airlines AAdvantage miles to book. We found some deep discounts on redemptions, thanks to some Economy Web Special rates that are even cheaper than American’s MilesSAAver award flights, which usually start at 7,500 miles.
The airline has a published award chart, but the real rates for award flights vary quite a bit based on availability. Economy Web Special awards are the most inexpensive award flight option. Some American Airlines award flights for as little as 5,000 miles one-way.
Here’s a sample of some of those deals to inspire your own upcoming reward travel:
1. New York to Miami
This Florida city is the most popular destination for New Yorkers, according to the travel search engine Hopper. Award flights from New York to Miami usually cost 12,500 miles if you manage to snag an Economy MileSAAver award, but we found some Economy Web Specials for less than half of that — 6,000 miles.

2. Los Angeles to Atlanta
These two hotbeds for the film and music industries are a five-hour plane ride away, but it doesn’t take a whole lot of miles to fly between the two. In April, there’s some Economy Web Special flights priced at only 6,000 miles. Compare that to the Economy MilesSAAver rate of 12,500 miles one-way or the Economy AAnytime rates that can go up to 50,000 miles.
3. Washington, D.C., to Charlotte
The Economy Web Special rates are so good that you might want to consider flying instead of driving on your next weekend getaway. For example, Charlotte, N.C., is a 6-hour drive from Washington, D.C., but you could get there in just an hour and a half if you fly. For only 5,000 miles each way, you could save yourself a bunch of time and money. We also found 5K award flights for other short hops, like Los Angeles to Las Vegas.
4. Seattle to Chicago
May is the month when both Chicago visitors and residents can finally emerge from their winter hibernations and explore the outdoors. Grab one-way flights starting at only 8,000 AAdvantage miles with Economy Web Special fares.
5. Philadelphia to Phoenix
On the other hand, visitors could also take advantage of these travel deals to visit locations in the spring before they reach unbearably hot temperatures in the summer months. Philadelphia-based flyers could redeem 8,000 AAdvantage miles for one-way flights to Phoenix in May.
6. San Francisco to Dallas
This route between California and Texas is more than half off when passengers use American Airlines miles to fly. The flight to Dallas from San Francisco is usually 12,500 miles with a MilesSAAver award, but there are some Economy Web Specials for only 6,000 miles.
The bottom line
Do your own search to see what Economy Web Specials apply to your desired destinations. As the name suggests, you can only book these award flights online, and they’re not available for all routes or dates. Keep in mind that this type of ticket doesn’t allow changes. If you want to cancel your trip, you’ll have to pay a $150 fee to reinstate your miles. American Airlines’ current change fee waiver due to coronavirus does not apply to award flights.
