What Is TD Bank, and Are Its Credit Cards Right for You?

The issuer offers competitive credit cards, whether you're seeking rewards, a respite from interest or the chance to help your credit. But the cards aren't available to everyone.

TD Cash Credit Card

The $0-annual-fee TD Cash Credit Card offers customizable cash-back rewards, as well as a sign-up bonus and an introductory 0% APR balance transfer offer.

Cardholders can pick two spending categories each quarter to earn an unlimited 3% and 2% cash back, respectively. Bonus categories can be changed up four times per calendar year, and include:

  • Dining.

  • Entertainment.

  • Gas.

  • Groceries.

  • Travel.

You’ll earn 1% cash back on everything else.

The ability to "choose your own adventure" when it comes to your bonus categories is an interesting wrinkle, although it's not unique among rewards credit cards. (As mentioned above, you can switch those bonus categories up to four times a year.) What is perhaps more compelling is that, unlike many other bonus cash-back credit cards, the TD Cash Credit Card doesn't impose any caps on those bonus rewards, meaning it can be a lucrative card for big spenders.

TD Double Up℠ Credit Card

If you want to earn cash back without juggling rewards categories, the TD Double Up℠ Credit Card and its unlimited 2% back on all purchases could be an ideal option. That simple but solid earnings structure puts it on par with some of the best flat-rate credit cards on the market.

And unlike some other 2% cash-back credit cards, the TD Double Up℠ Credit Card also offers a sign-up bonus.

It's a top-notch pick — if you live in an eligible state. (See the list above.)

TD Clear Visa Platinum Credit Card

The TD Clear Visa Platinum Credit Card doesn't earn rewards, but it's built for people who need to carry a balance from month to month. You’ll have either a $1,000 or $2,000 credit line, and instead of paying interest, you'll owe a set monthly fee (up to $20). The idea of such a highly predictable monthly payment may sound appealing to some.

But keep in mind that you'll be charged that fee every month — amounting to as much as $240 a year — whether you use your card or not. That could make the TD Clear Visa Platinum Credit Card far more expensive than a card with a traditional APR, especially if you never carry a balance to begin with (in which case, of course, you'll never owe interest.)

If you have good to excellent credit (typically, FICO scores of at least 690), you have better options. If you need to carry a balance, for example, consider the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card. There are no monthly or annual fees, and new cardholders qualify for a 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 18.24%, 24.74%, or 29.99% Variable APR.

TD FlexPay Credit Card

The TD FlexPay Credit Card does not offer rewards, but it features a competitive 0% intro APR period on balance transfers, which are limited to credit card debt currently held by an issuer outside of TD Bank.

The TD FlexPay Credit Card offers cardholders the ability to receive reimbursement of one late payment fee (up to $40) every 12 billing cycles. (Late fee forgiveness does not change your monthly payment requirement. Past due payments will be reported to credit bureaus subject to applicable law and standard practices. This may affect your credit score.)

🤓Nerdy Tip

Some issuers do allow balance transfers of auto loans, personal loans and student loans. Each major credit card issuer has its own rules for what debt can be balance transferred to a credit card.

TD First Class Visa Signature credit card

The TD First Class Visa Signature card earns First Class miles that can be redeemed for cash back, travel, merchandise and gift cards. Cardholders receive 3 miles per $1 spent on travel and dining purchases, and 1 mile per $1 spent on everything else. There’s an $89 annual fee that’s waived the first year.

As of this writing, new cardholders can grab a 25,000-mile sign-up bonus, distributed as 15,000 miles after making your first purchase within 6 months of account opening, and an additional 10,000 miles after spending $3,000 within 6 months of account opening.

The card also comes with an introductory 0% APR offer on balance transfers.

If travel rewards are what you’re after, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card would probably offer more value. It has a $95 annual fee and earns Chase Ultimate Rewards®, which can be redeemed for cash or travel — or can be transferred to one of many travel partners. New cardholders can also earn the following massive bonus: Earn 60,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's $750 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

TD Cash Secured credit card

The TD Cash Secured credit card lets you earn rewards while building or mending your credit. Your credit line will be between $300 and $5,000 and is secured by the balance in a savings account that you’ll open with TD Bank after card approval. Once you’ve consistently paid the secured card’s balance for a certain period, you may be eligible to upgrade to an unsecured card and get your deposit back.

Cardholders will also earn an unlimited 1% cash back on all eligible purchases.

The ability to eventually graduate to a better product within TD Bank's portfolio makes this a decent secured credit card. But $300 is on the high side for a minimum required deposit, and unlike some other secured products, you must fund it by opening up an account with TD Bank.

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card, for instance, has a minimum required deposit of $200, and you don't have to fund it via an account with Discover. And it, too, offers rewards: 2% cash back at gas stations and restaurants on up to $1,000 in combined purchases each quarter. All other purchases earn 1% back.
