We’re used to seeing discounts on TVs, laptops and jewelry on Black Friday. But as an increasing number of businesses and organizations join the Black Friday frenzy, bargain hunters can come across some great deals even outside the mall.
Here are five of the most unusual Black Friday discounts and offers we’ve come across:
1. Free Black Pets
If you’re looking for a new furry friend, check out your local animal shelter this Black Friday. Since 2012, animal care and control service provider ACCT Philly in Philadelphia and PAWS in Lynnwood, Wash., have waived all fees for the adoption of any black cat or dog.
Other organizations, such as Cat Love Chino Hills in California, the Portsmouth Humane Society in Virginia and the Seattle Humane Society in Washington have also waived or lowered adoption fees for black cats, dogs or both.
These specials offer a great opportunity to find a new home for these animals, which are often reported to be less likely to be adopted than their lighter-coated friends.
If you don’t live near any of these locations, call up your local animal shelter to ask if they have any similar deals for dark-coated animals this year.
But the pet-related specials don’t stop there. Marietta Vet Clinic in Marietta, Ga., offered a discount on veterinary exams. Anyone who paid for one exam could get a countless number of other animals examined for free. The deal did not cover vaccinations and was not limited to any coat color.
2. Whiter Teeth, Cheaper
Everyone knows about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But have you heard of Wellness Wednesday? The Wednesday after Thanksgiving, the holiday was established by the American Academy for Oral Systematic Health in 2012 to promote oral wellness.
Although it’ll probably be at least a few years before your regular dentist gets on board by offering cleanings and checkups at 50% off, at least one cosmetic dental clinic in the country has seized the opportunity presented by the shopping holiday: Verde Pointe Dental Associates in Marietta, Ga., featured its $500 whitening system for only $299 on Black Friday last year. Who knows, maybe the idea will catch on, and we’ll start seeing Black Friday deal hunters line up not just at their favorite retailer’s but even at the dentist’s office.
3. Partying (and Shopping) at the Museum
Wondering what to do with your kids instead of dragging them on a shopping trip from hell? A number of museums have responded to the shopping bonanza by opening their doors and offering lower prices and special programs.
Last year, the Oakland Museum of California offered 50% off admission for adults and free admission for visitors younger than 18. The museum hosted a party from 5 to 9 p.m. featuring a DJ, gourmet food trucks, local beer and wine specials, game-making workshops for Native American Heritage Month, salsa lessons, a holiday kiosk, extended hours in the galleries and more.
In Arizona, the Phoenix Art Museum offered free early hours and special offers throughout the day, including complimentary donuts and coffee, 10% off in the museum store and free year-long membership to the first 55 visitors.
History aficionados in Minneapolis could take advantage of a range of specials from Mill City Museum in honor of Black Friday. With doors opening at 6 a.m., the museum offered free admission until 9 a.m., as well as free donuts, coffee and limited-edition giveaways. Early-bird visitors who showed up before 8 a.m. received 25% coupons for the museum’s gift shop, and the first 30 families to visit received free household membership. The museum also featured live music and chances to win prizes.
Check the museums near you to see if they offer any discounts or special events this Black Friday.
4. $500 Off a Mortgage
Looking to save on your mortgage? Black Friday may offer bargains in yet another area of your life. Last year, Shore Mortgage in Troy, Mich., offered $500 off customers’ home loan closing costs.
5. Free Car Wash, Plus a Buck
It’s no secret that Black Friday kicks off one of the best times to buy a new car. Auto supplies, such as tires and motor oil, also feature great discounts on the post-Thanksgiving holiday. But one car-related expense that doesn’t usually register on consumers’ Black Friday radar is a car wash.
Last year, Prestige Car Wash & Gas in Taunton, Mass., offered free exterior car washes all day. But that wasn’t all – each customer who stopped by received a dollar in cash. It’s hard to surpass a deal that actually gives you money and even washes your cash for free.
Keep your eyes open for more nontraditional deals this year!
