The details of this year’s sales haven’t been released yet, but last year’s promotions provide a great preview of what to expect in 2014. And when it came to bags, shoppers in 2013 had a wealth of great choices.
Although large department stores like Sears and Kohl’s get most of the Black Friday hype (both marked down women’s handbags 60%, by the way), great deals on handbags were available from an array of stores, including online retailers, high-end designers and small shops.
Through its online store and brick-and-mortar location in Portland, Ore., Ellington Handbags offers quality women’s bags in a diverse selection of types and materials. From nylon purses at $39 to leather totes at $389, the retailer provides an array of styles for all kinds of budgets. Starting on Black Friday last year, online shoppers could take advantage of a 20% sitewide discount with the promotional code JOY20. The promotion lasted from Black Friday through Cyber Monday and included free shipping.
Known for feminine and whimsical designs, the Betsey Johnson line includes apparel and handbags. During the store’s Black Friday sale last year, shoppers could take advantage of free shipping and a 30% discount on the entire site, using the promotional code SHOP30. At their original prices, Betsey Johnson bags range from $50 to more than $100, with the Kitchi Cat Clutch priced at $58 and the Botanical Safari Weekender bag selling for $138.
A spinoff of clothing retailer Gap, Piperlime focuses on women’s jewelry, apparel, shoes, accessories and handbags. Ranging from $68 to $698, the broad selection of handbags includes clutches, hobos, cross-body bags, shoulder bags and totes. During its Black Friday sale last year, the online store featured a 30% discount with the promotional code THANKS. The sale included free shipping on all purchases.
Designed to be multifunctional and practical, items from Kelly Moore Bags range from $149 to $299 at full price. Last year, the online retailer offered shoppers a $35 discount on any bag from Black Friday through Cyber Monday.
A major name in casual luxury bags, Rebecca Minkoff, featured a major promotion last year. During the sitewide tiered sale, shoppers received a 20% discount for spending $200, 25% off for spending $400 and a 30% markdown for spending $600. The promotion also included a free gift. Customers browsing the website can find a broad range of bags from less than $100 to $550.
Popular designer Kate Spade also offered discounts last Black Friday. Kate Spade bags usually go from $148 to $1,500, but during last year’s promotion, a large selection of bags, as well as small leather goods, jewelry and shoes, featured discounts up to 75%. The online-only sale, which began on Black Friday and ended at just before midnight Pacific time Saturday, also included free ground shipping to all 50 states.
Whether it’s a tote or a backpack you’re looking for, practical gear is what you’ll find at State Bags. What’s more, for every purchase made, the company donates to children in need. Its versatile Ashton bag can be used as a single-strap shoulder bag or a tote, selling at its regular price for $150. Last year, the retailer offered a themed promotion, discounting all black bags, regardless of style, by 30%. For the Ashton, that’s $45 worth of savings.
For shoppers looking for fashion at a discount, The Outnet offers a selection of marked-down designer women’s clothing, shoes, handbags and accessories. During its cyber weekend promotion last year, shoppers could take advantage of a 30% discount plus free shipping by applying the code FREESHIPWKND. The prices of bags at the site range from less than $100 to more than $2,000.
Originally a jewelry line, House of Harlow 1960 also offers handbags, shoes, clothing and sunglasses. Starting last Black Friday, the online retailer featured a sitewide discount of 25% with the promotional code BLACKHOH. The deal lasted through Cyber Monday. Since House of Harlow handbags range from $168 to $295 without a discount, the sale offered shoppers discounts of anywhere from $42 to almost $74.
The online retailer Bluefly sells top designers such as Prada, Gucci and Christian Louboutin, and promises up to 70% markdowns from their original prices. Since the store’s inventory focuses on such high-end labels, it’s not hard to find bags upwards of $3,000, such as items from Chanel, Bottega Veneta and Hermès. But if you’re shopping on a more modest budget, you can find bags for less than $50. In that price category, you’re more likely to find labels like Big Buddha, BCBGeneration and Toss than Christian Dior and Louis Vuitton. During its Black Friday promotion last year, the store featured 30% off its designer handbags, as well as contemporary apparel, shoes and accessories.
The online store Shop Hers features new and pre-owned women’s designer fashion, including handbags. During its Black Friday sale last year, the Shop Hers offered a 30% discount through Cyber Monday. Shop Hers offers a broad selection of handbags for a range of budgets. Although some of its bags go for more than $1,000, you can also find a decent collection of items for less than $100, including a Giorgio Armani clutch for $20 and a Prada shoulder bag for $99. Subtract 30% from those prices, and you can rack up some impressive savings.
Another store to keep an eye out for this year is handbag and jewelry retailer Dannijo. Starting the Wednesday before Black Friday, the store kicked off a six-day promotion of “surprise sales” last year, ending on Cyber Monday. The promotions weren’t publicly advertised, but shoppers could get the details by signing up for the Dannijo newsletter. Sign up early this year to be on top of all the discounts the retailer has to offer.
