What is Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection?

Berkshire Hathaway’s travel insurance offers a variety of policies for customers on the road. Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies has an A++ rating from AM Best, which rates companies within the insurance industry.

A++ is superior and the top rating available from AM Best, marking Berkshire Hathaway as a standout among competitors.

What does Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection cover?

Overall, Berkshire Hathaway travel insurance coverage runs the gamut, with a broad array of standard inclusions:

  • Berkshire Hathaway health insurance coverage: Covers emergency medical situations such as illnesses and injuries.

  • Trip cancellation and trip interruption: Reimburses prepaid, nonrefundable costs incurred as a result of your trip being canceled or interrupted.

  • Rental car insurance: Provides insurance when renting a car.

  • Lost luggage: Replaces the value of the items lost in your luggage.

  • Emergency medical evacuation: Covers the costs of evacuating you in an emergency medical situation.

Note that most Berkshire Hathaway medical coverage is primary, which means it will pay out before any other plans. (ExactCare Value and ExactCare Lite are secondary.)

Plus, every plan that offers emergency medical coverage also provides inclusions for a pre-existing conditions waiver provided you meet eligibility requirements and buy a policy within 15 days of the initial trip deposit.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection policy overview

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection offers seven plans for travelers. Three of these are a standardized ExactCare offering, with variations in policy maximums and a few extra inclusions on more expensive plans.

There are also six specialty plans available. These plans focus on what type of activity you’ll be doing, whether you’re on a road trip, looking for luxury benefits or need protection while scuba diving.

🤓Nerdy Tip

Don’t want to shell out for travel insurance? A variety of travel credit cards offer complimentary trip insurance assuming you pay for the trip with the card.

What’s not covered by a Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection plan

The protections excluded from your coverage depend on the policy you buy. For example, the AirCare plan doesn’t offer coverage for emergency medical expenses. So look closely at the policy terms to make sure you have the protections you're looking for.

As a general rule, travel insurance — including Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection — won’t cover these situations:

  • Adventure activities (unless specifically included).

  • Anything that happens while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • Named storms.

  • Epidemics.

Consider comparison shopping

If you're not 100% sold on purchasing a plan from Berkshire Hathaway, you can use a travel insurance aggregator to compare policies across multiple companies at once.

Which Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection travel insurance plan is best for me?

The best Berkshire Hathaway travel insurance plan for you depends on what you’re doing.

For example, the AdrenalineCare option may be a good idea if you’re planning to do extreme sports since it offers increased coverage for emergency evacuation and health care.

The LuxuryCare plan has the highest limits for medical expenses and medical evacuation, but it’s also the most expensive. On the other plans, the medical coverage is rather limited.

On the flip side, budget-conscious travelers who still want some protection when flying may prefer the less expensive AirCare plan, which will reimburse fixed costs when flights go awry.

Many travel credit cards include various trip protections, so look over those benefits to ensure you’re not paying for something you already have.

Does Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection offer 24/7 travel assistance?

Yes, Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection includes 24/7 assistance. This includes concierge services as well as help with emergency situations. To access it, call 844-411-2487.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection review recapped

You never know what might happen before or during a trip, so buying travel insurance is usually a good idea. A trip protection policy can help you recoup unexpected costs and save some headaches later.

Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection is a trustworthy insurance provider, and the speed with which it processes claims is impressive. However, its medical coverage limits aren’t the highest. If you’re looking for emergency medical coverage, we recommend considering other travel insurance providers.

Star rating methodology

Travel insurance

NerdWallet's ratings for travel insurance companies take into account the following details about each insurer:

  • Scope of coverage.

  • Customizability.

  • Consumer experience and complaints.

  • Cost.

The best travel insurers excel in all of these categories. They provide the information people need to make a purchase without any surprises along the way. They offer insurance at a fair price and allow customers to customize plans to meet their coverage preferences. They're also able to keep their customers happy throughout the relationship.

Data collection and review process

NerdWallet collects over a dozen data points for each insurer we analyze from their public-facing websites and third-party analyses. These data points are then compared against one another and against NerdWallet's standards for good travel insurance companies to determine a star rating.

Data is collected on a regular basis and reviewed by our editorial team for consistency and accuracy. Final star ratings are presented on a scale of one to five stars, where a one-star score represents "poor" and a five-star score represents "excellent."

The reviews team

The writers and editors behind NerdWallet's travel insurance reviews are insurance specialists who have had their work featured by or appear in The Associated Press, The Washington Post, The New York Times, the Chicago-Sun Times, U.S. News & World Report and the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. Each writer and editor follows NerdWallet’s strict guidelines for editorial independence.

In addition to travel insurance, the team covers travel rewards programs, airlines and hotels.

Rating specifics

Our star ratings are weighted based on our editorial and professional opinions. We use the following weightings when rating travel insurers:

  • Scope of coverage (25%).

  • Customizability (25%).

  • Consumer experience and complaints (25%).

  • Cost (25%).

Scope of coverage ratings are based on assessments of a company’s standard protections, including:

  • Travel medical insurance.

  • Trip cancellation.

  • Trip interruption.

  • Trip delay.

  • Baggage and personal belongings, lost luggage.

  • Emergency medical assistance.

  • Emergency medical evacuation.

  • Emergency medical repatriation.

  • Accidental death and dismemberment insurance.

  • Rental car coverage.

Customizability ratings factor in whether coverage limits are fixed prices or a percentage of the trip cost (the percentage is generally better), whether a policy has customizations available, and the number of bonus features.

  • 24-hour assistance.

  • Pre-existing medical conditions coverage.

  • Extreme sport coverage.

  • CFAR add on availability.

  • Travel health insurance.

  • Interruption for Any Reason.

  • Travel Inconvenience.

  • Cancel for Work Reasons.

  • Electronics coverage.

Consumer experience ratings are based on provider reviews on Squaremouth.com. If the company is not in the Squaremouth database, we default to Google reviews.

Affordability ratings are based on the percentage of total trip cost a plan costs a policyholder. Less than 4% is considered excellent, whereas over 9% is considered poor.
